Finally, a dance-punk band that is doing it all right and will keep you moving all night. The second full-length from The Je Ne Sais Quoi is quite a stunner, and a much-welcomed improvement upon their first album and EP. The band has (for the most part) traded in their previous to the lo-fi production, hestitant drumming and angular guitars for lush orchestrations, vocoders, gorgeous melodies and rock-solid beats - and the results are truly amazing. Having released "Chameleon" as a single what seems over a year ago, the band has used that as a rough blueprint when it came to solidifying what makes "Rhythm" so captivating. Songs such as "Heroica" and "I see it faint tonight" are of the mellow kind, but still are quite danceable, as mellow is a term used loosely to desribe them. "DWTTATF" melds a Parliament-esque synth bassline with incredible hooks, and the following track "Skeletal shakes" harkens on a slight angular guitar riff, but then the chorus hits an almost hip-hop style beat and achieves greatness. To be honest, I really wasn't expecting this album to be as good as it is and, for their own sake, The Je Ne Sais Quoi have created one of the best Scandinavian releases of the year.

MP3: The Je Ne Sais Quoi - Rhythm

Typically, I'm not too big on the punk-funk thing. !!! was a massive disappointment after the Yah Mos and I always liked the Rapture better back in the beginning, when they sounded more like Wire. Yet, somehow The Je Ne Sais Quoi appeals to me. Maybe it's the lack of personal history? Or perhaps it's simply because they're a better band? TJNSQ succeeds where the others fail, by maintaining that punk energy and, at the same time, displaying serious musical chops. I wouldn't necessarily call them virtuosic, but they hold their own far better than the other examples I've cited. There's a lot of syncopation going on in the title track "Rhythm" (as one would expect from the title), but it's nothing that would trip you up on the dancefloor. That would defeat the point, right? And listen to those tight vocal lines - that's the stuff that makes TJNSQ better than average. While I'm still not bonkers about this sort of thing, they do what they do and they do it well. I can get down with that.

MP3: Will Gambola Sing - Space is a strange place

Will Gambola Sing boasts a pretty amazing pedigree. They've got John Roger Olsson of IAT.MP3 artists The Grand Opening plus Jimmy Ottosson/Jimmy O of The Je Ne Sais Quoi, solo artist Mikko Singh, Joakim Labraaten of Yamon Yamon (another promising act) and Anders Ljung of Ohm. Considering the members other acts, it's not surprising that they make incredibly lush, dreamy pop music, but it is also kind of disappointing that they've decided to forego and keep it purely instrumental. What gives dudes? You've got more than one talented vocalist among you, so I wanna hear some beautiful harmonies. Aside from that one awfully minor complaint, this is some nice stuff, especially for what I imagine would be regarded as a demo. The songs and the playing is fantastic, the arrangements make great use of space and the recording sounds excellent. Definitely looking forward to hearing more down the road!
