On Saturday, August 6 the "Modul Modal" radio program on Radio Orange in Wien, Austria will be broadcasting a special one-hour program on Swedish music entitled "De Svenskarna kommer!". The program will be in German, but the playlist lineup includes a great assortment of up-and-coming indie artists such as All of My Brother's Girlfriends, Firefox AK, The Je Ne Sais Quoi, Ninja Massacre, Tokyo Eye and Torpedo. The program airs live at 3pm local time and can be streamed here, but I do believe that host Janis Meißner will try to post a recording somewhere after the fact. More info on the program here: http://orange.or.at/programs/modul_modal/

Recommended.

Swedish post-punks The Je Ne Sais Quoi played an extra-special show at Debaser in Stockholm on June 18 with all sorts of special guests appearing on every song, including scene luminaries such as Ed Greene, Andreas Söderström, Knife and Ape, John (Bad Monkey), ASSID, Kate Riff (Soviac) and their sixth member Gabriel. Why am I telling you about this? Well, because they recorded the entire show on video and are offering it as a free download via bittorrent. You can find the link on the band's website: http://www.cilla.com/tjnsq

Torpedo
Anticlockwise
Strange Fruit

To be honest, I've only read of the bands the members of Torpedo were in: Tiger Lou, Starmarket and The Je Ne Sais Quoi. I wasn't really sure of what to expect when listening to this EP. After listening to "Anticlockwise", I was really impressed. It takes the energy of guitarist Pontus Levahn's band Starmarket and the gentleness of his other band Tiger Lou (with Torpedo bandmate and bass player Erik Welén). Combined with TJNSQ drummer Jimmy Ottoson and rounded out by lead vocalist and guitarist Andreas Hogby, the band creates atmospheric indie rock. Can't really beat a band with a song about getting rid of a rival lover ("Plastic bag and a shovel"). Good stuff.

New mp3 today from Göteborg post-punk trio Cut City. The song comes from the group's upcoming 7" on the US label GSL, but is already an indie dancefloor hit in Sweden because it's just so undeniably good. That's the computer age for ya. The most immediate point of reference for you youngsters will be Interpol, but Cut City's sound comes more directly from the classic post-punk sounds of Gang of Four, Wire and Factory Records. It's gritty, dark and anxious - the way it should be, unlike all the polished, boring stuff you're likely to hear on the radio these days such as The Killers or The Bravery. There's actually a few other Swedish bands like The Je Ne Sais Quoi and 1999 who do justice to the genre and maybe we'll revisit them at another time. Tonight: I'm going to see SF's leading post-post revivalists Giant Haystacks who are playing at Gilman alongside Denmark's Gorilla Angreb (ex-Amdi Petersens Arme). Should be a good time I hope.

The clip was made using various footage the band filmed during their December European tour.

Look for The Je Ne Sais Quoi to do a short US tour sometime around May.
