Live report: Niccokick @ The Barfly, London 02/11/05
Too many slow gigs can really get you bored of going to see bands. Sometimes one slow gig is enough to wish you'd gone to a club instead of a gig. This was the case for me the day before I went to see Niccokick, when I witnessed Logh play an excellent, but very slow, show at the Water Rats, London. Walking home I reminded myself to not go and see any bands who play post-rock, slowcore, or any other music of the sluggish variety, when I feel like dancing (and not dozing). Thankfully Niccokick played the day after, which reimbursed my love for live music, and worked as a shot in the arm. In fact, the first song that they played, "I drink to get thrilled," would in fact have been enough for me to get through up and coming gigs by Sons and Daughters, Low, Willy Mason and other folks who have decided that rock'n'roll music just isn't for them. Calling Niccokick rock'n'roll might be taking it a bit far though, melodic indierock (with quirky but super nice singing) might be a more precise description of their infectious sound, and not all their songs are rocking ones, some are slow and soft, but it's for their shorter and faster numbers that I personally adore them. They're playing again on Tuesday, and even though I had plans to go and see an exciting bill consisting of Hope of the States, Sons & Daughters, The Bravery, and Willy Mason, I just might have to give that a miss for another chance to see Niccokick (also, this time I think they'll be headlining which hopefully means that they'll play a longer set than the eight songs they ripped up at the Barfly).
