MP3: Weeping Willows - Broken promise land

Weeping Willows have a new album out, but I haven't heard it yet so I figure it's a good excuse to visit some of the band's early material. It is Friday, after all. And what could be better for the Friday after Valentine's Day than a grand ol' heartbreaker like the title track to 1997's "Broken promise land". Each and every line drips with over-the-top melodrama. Take it to the bridge: "You made me cry / You make me want to die / Why, baby why? / Why did you lie?" and then driving it home with a final anguished sigh. It's so grandiose, it's almost comical. But that's the beauty of WW and a big part of what makes them so good. There are no feeble gestures here, only broad brushstrokes. It's bigger than life and a Swedish melancholy rock classic.
As for the new album "Fear & love"? They're trying to sell it as a return to form. I enjoy later-era WW, but I also agree with AMG's assertion that the more they tried to discover their own identity and change their sound, the less unique they became. Regardless of whether or not they've successfully regressed, I'm still looking forward to hearing it.

Weeping Willows have confirmed that their new album "Fear & love" will be released on Valentine's Day, February 14. The first single "The burden" b/w "The moon is my witness" precedes it on January 3.

The good people at Hybris have made a special myspace page to help spread some Christmas cheer: http://www.myspace.com/godjul
I especially like the Sweptaways track with lead vocals from Magnus Carlson of Weeping Willows.

Weeping Willows have confirmed the title of their forthcoming album to be "Fear and love". The first single will be released in January. In related news, listen for WW frontman Magnus Carlson on the upcoming Christmas EP from The Sweptaways entitled "Cry cry Christmas". He sings lead on the title track (a song he co-wrote) as well as "Silver bells". Look for it on Hybris soon.

The new Weeping Willows record is currently being mixed by Micke Herrström at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm. Expect a February 2007 release with touring to commence in April. Artwork will be handled by Sakari Paananen.

Weeping Willows have finished recording 15 new songs for their next album! The band says it's a more laidback album with music that is "a nod to their earlier days when the music was more influenced by the 60's." To which I say: awesome. Not that I don't like the band's later material (I do), it's pretty well known that their first two albums are easily their best. Anyhow, the record was recorded in Stockholm with Andy Bell of Oasis and is currently being mixed together with Sigge Krantz. Keyboardist Martin Hederos of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives plays on some of the songs and Patrik Andersson of Barr contributes guest vocals on two tracks. Assuming all goes well, expect a December release.

Weeping Willows have been busy in the studio recording a new album. Everything is being tracked live and Martin Hederos (TSOOL, Hederos & Hellberg) guests with organ on a few tracks. Production is being handled by Andy Bell (Erasure) and Jazz bassist Sigge Krantz (Don Cherry, Råttan Frittz) is engineering. Nothing is for certain yet, but the band hopes to be done by autumn. In other news, WW will once again act as the house band for Allsång på Debaser, acting as your live karaoke music as you sing your favorite indie evergreen tunes this summer, should you find yourself in Stockholm.

Everyone sings along with the Acid House Kings
Labrador

Last year Acid House Kings did a nice little promotion when they launched their album "Sing along with..." by putting a karaoke spin on it. Now they've released an EP where five different artists interpret songs from the album. They got Magnus Carlsson (Weeping Willows) doing "Will you love me in the morning?" which isn't that different from the original. Les Trés Bien Ensemble render "My heart is a stone" in French and Lasse Lindh does a cool Swedish version of "That's because you drive me". Montt Mardié and Don Lennon with their own characteristic vocals both manage to make "Do what you wanna do" and "Tonight is forever" into their 'own' songs. Acid House Kings have managed to get a bunch of excellent artists to cover their songs, so if you like "Sing along..." and, like me, love cover versions, I think you have to buy this EP. Hopefully there'll be a volume two!
