UK webzine Leicester Bangs reviews Tobias Hellkvist, one of my favorite up-and-coming artists: http://www.leicesterbangs.co.uk/reviews.html
Our usual Friday programming is being preempted this week because I've got an extra-special treat, Tobias Hellkvist performing a cover of "Abomination" by KVLR. What could be better than one of the current best up-and-coming acts covering one of my all-time favorites? Naturally, I think it's awesome, but then again, how could I not? It's almost as if it was tailormade just for me!
Tobias' version keeps the basic melody intact, but by stripping away the heavy drums (one of KVLR's main calling-cards), he gives the song a whole new feeling. Johan Sellman's original vocal is commanding and venomous while Tobias sings with something that's more akin to simmering resentment. There's a slight weariness that's at odds with the lyrics, but it works in the end, kinda in the same way that the new José González record does. You don't have to shout to show you're angry, y'know? It's the quiet ones that you really gotta watch out for.

This song ("Late nights") is more ambient/drone-oriented like his "Transports" album than some of the other more guitar-based tracks he's posted more recently.

I have the utmost admiration for young artists who take on a genre that is often ignored or belittled by others, and proceed to inject fresh new life into it. Sweden's Tobias Hellkvist has done just that in the area of drone-based ambient with his exceptional new CD "Transports". This is a virtually flawless, efficiently produced showcase of warm, shimmering drones and evocative sonic adornments that exemplifies why some of us are still in love with ambient. Hellkvist has the aesthetic of an inspired painter, lost in the beauty of what's slowly emerging on his canvas. "Aching," "Slowly but surely" and "Nothingland" are all lush, hypnotic soundscapes with the shimmer of a frozen lake on a sunny winter morning; "Moment at Ven" utilizes gentle guitar picking and seaside bird calls to place you squarely in a soothing landscape. Nothing is wasted or excessive here, it's just seven perfect tracks of serene, blissful ambient pleasure.

Tobias Hellkvist, another artist I've featured here recently, has a new untitled song up on myspace from his forthcoming record: http://www.myspace.com/tobiashellkvist
More acoustic guitar-based than pure drone and, like all his stuff, it's really, really nice. Tobias' remix of "Doppelgänger" by Efterklang is also online now and can be downloaded right here: http://efterklang.net/home/2007/06/21/doppelganger-remix/

Buy his latest record "Transports" right here. Oh, and the label he's talking starting? Should everything work out according to plan, his first release will be from Martin Nilsson of Iisole, yet another promising young act I've been a big fan of. Tobias Hellkvist, one of my favorite up-and-coming young talents, is working on an album of covers and has upped his version of "Summer away" by Aloha to myspace: http://www.myspace.com/tobiashellkvist
Swedish artist Tobias Hellkvist first made a name for himself with his sublime acoustic cover of Efterklang's "Step aside" (listen at myspace). The electronics of the original are beautifully transcribed to organic instruments. In many ways, it's not too disimilar to José González's famous version The Knife's "Heartbeats". Neither cover supplants the original electronic version; they stand alone as individual works, like two sides of a coin. On Tobias' new album "Transports" however, the focus is shifted from sublime acoustic pop to drone as the work is entirely instrumental and lacking in conventional guitarwork or song structures. The track "Moment at Ven" (listen at the aforementioned myspace link) is most straightforward of the pieces in that it's built around a recognizable guitar figure, albeit enhanced with digital effects and backed by field recordings. It's a beautiful, languid piece of music, but I've decided to share one of the longer, more abstract tracks instead.
"When everything fell apart" buils layers upon layers of shimmering waves of sound, gradually getting louder and more intense as the piece continues. To me, it's the sound of lying in the sun without care of obligation: pure bliss. Voices and guitar fragments come and go, but the gentle wave of the cental chordal theme continues unabated throughout. It's the kind of ambient dronepop that I can listen to on endless repeat (and sometimes do). You want feel-good summer jams? Look no further.
