I know it probably seems odd to review a free comp with limited availability (it was primarily distributed to subscribers of UK mag The Wire with copies of the December issue), but when you consider how well this collection captures the most exciting aspects of Sweden's current music scene, it should hopefully make sense. Simply put, Häpna, Ideal Recordings and Kning Disk are the top three Swedish labels currently releasing a consistent stream of interesting, forward-thinking music. Even with the few artists I'm not so fond of such as Nicolai Dunger's A Taste of Ra, I would never fault their craftsmanship or imagination. It might not appeal directly to my own personal tastes, but it has my utmost respect and that is of crucial importance. There's always something to admire, even when you are not inclined to investigate further.

As for the styles of music explored in this collection, it's incredibly rich and diverse. There's everything from pop melodicism (Anna Järvinen, Eric Malmberg, Balroynigress) to dark, terrifying drones (Sewer Election, Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words, The Skull Defekts), fractured experimentalism (Hans Appelqvist, Tape, Folke Rabe) and classical composition (Erik Enocksson, Jerry Johansson and Library Tapes). All in all, a perfect portrait of where to look for the future of Swedish music. Ignore it and get left behind.

Ideal Recordings, Häpna and Kning Disk, three of the best current Swedish labels for exciting new music, are teaming up with UK mag The Wire for a special sampler entitled "Whispers from the forests, screams from the mountains" featuring 77 minutes of what they do best. I don't know the full tracklist, but Ideal reports that they are contributing exclusive works from Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words, Sewer Election, Christine Ödlund and Mokira plus a track from Nash Kontroll off their upcoming 7". In conjunction with said comp's release, the three labels will again team up for a live show at Konsthallen in Göteborg on December 8 featuring Balroynigress (Kning Disk), Hans Appelqvist (Häpna), DLSODW (Ideal) and a special performance by the ensemble of Jean-Louis Huhta (The Skull Defekts), Anders Dahl and Johan Berthling (Häpna/Tape).

Noise is always an interesting genre to review, as I find it to be one of the most visual-based listening experiences. I picture various scenes or animations that would work well, especially with the style of ambient electronic noise created by The Skull Defekts. Whilst the music is stimulating by itself, I feel that visual accompaniment would enhance the story of the music the band is telling. Seeing this live with motion would allow the audience to really grasp onto the concepts and become immersed in such glorious sound and take them to an altered state of mind.

The Skull Defekts - Blood spirits & drums are singingThe Skull Defekts
Blood spirits & drums are singing

On The Skull Defekts' new album, "Blood spirits & drums are singing", their trademark electronic sound has been replaced with one comprised primarily of traditional instrumentation - drums, bass, lead, the works. The electronic elements are still there, lurking in the shadows, but never having the same grand presence they enjoyed on The Skull Defekts' previous work. The album opens innocuously enough with "Unholy drums are singing", which I feel, is too long, considering that it offers nothing of significance to the album. The album really takes off past this track, although the closer "White lights burning lights" matches the opener in sheer lack of brilliance. On the whole, "BS&DAS" isn't a bad album, but I think The Skull Defekts' venture into territories uncharted hasn't done them any favors. Most of their previous stuff, it seems to me, offered a glimpse into the mind of a disturbed individual. Something dark. Something foreboding. Something very, very ominous. It's hard to describe exactly, but it seems better executed with the use of electronics. Surprisingly enough, the lyrics/ vocals on this album prevent it from being just another poorly thought-out experiment. Something I never thought I'd say about a primarily noise/drone outfit with hard rock tendencies. Almost in keeping with the theme of mentally disturbed: the lyrics aren't perfect. They ramble. They're mildly unsettling. But they have an almost hypnotic effect to them that completely draws you in. The effect is carried out to perfection, coupled with the drums on "Rhythm is the key" and "The secret" (which also feature a good deal of the noise elements on the album). It's simply a crying shame that the rest of the album doesn't match up.

Don't just take my word for it: Foxy Digitalis gives The Skull Defekts' "Skkull" a 9/10: http://www.foxydigitalis.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=2734

MP3: The Skull Defekts - The secret

The Skull Defekts continue to be ridiculously prolific, but they are not ones to ever repeat themselves. 2007 already saw the release of "Skkull", an all-electronic featuring the core three members and now we have "Blood spirits & drums are singing", an album composed of heavy, rhythmic works using a more typical rock-band instrumentation. Of course, this still being Skull Defekts, there is still plenty of squawling noise which will greet you at the onset of today's mp3. However, once that fades away and the vocals come in, you'll probably be surprised by how keenly melodic it is. The riff endlessly cycles and pummels, building a simmering level of tension. Repeat. Build. Hypnotize. This is much more in line with Swans or Lungfish than the Skull Defekts of past and I love it. So, the only question then is where to next?
