One thing I like about this this album is that it's a grower, I just don't seem to be able to get bored of it, no matter how many times I play it. The lyrics are also worth their word count in gold. "Tamagotchi freestyle", for example, contains the superb lines "For what it's worth I know it's hard to stay, every day we miss you, Leila K". Lovekevins sound a bit like the love child of The Tough Alliance and The Radio Dept., which isn't as freakish as it sounds. No, it's very catchy, fresh, pleasant and I think now is the time for you to go and visit their Myspace page and give them a little listen (before you buy this CD).

MP3: The Lovekevins - Happy happy

Guest post today from frequent IAT contributor Nancy Baym:

Swedish band The Lovekevins have what may be the least informative yet most rewarding website on the Internet. It says almost nothing, but it's got what matters most: downloads of six magnificent pop songs, each waiting to grow on you in its own way. An old news item on It's a trap! teased that a full length record should be out by summer. It's not, but in the meantime, here's a happy-Swedish-horn laden pop song. As seems to be required for Swedish indie pop credibility, the lyrics are far gloomier than the cheerful sounds ("happy happy I'm a toy/a boat without a sailor"), but like sweet and sour soup, the contrast only makes it better.

The Lovekevins
Blame the English 7"
self-released

I'm not really sure what we're supposed to blame the English for. Coldplay? Steak and kidney pie? Tony Blair? But I do know that The Lovekevins are a new upcoming band from Sweden, and they're excellent! I've been blessed to see them twice this summer, and both of those performances blew me away. This seven inch got three excellent poppy songs that are so catchy it hurts, and one ("Taking David (by strategy)") that's sounds much murkier (a tiny bit like Radio Dept.), but it's nonetheless great - just too bad it's so short. If The Lovekevins will ever release an album that will put both of these sides of them on display, I'm certain it's going to be magnificent.
