MP3: Vånna Inget - Allvar

Not that I really need an excuse to post a track from the very-excellent Vånna Inget, but considering that today is International Woman's Day (and Purim, but let's not get distracted), I'll take it. Sweden has long excelled in the realm of female-fronted melodic punk with early acts such as Tant Strul, Mögel and Pink Champagne leading the way and modern bands like Knugen Faller and Masshysteri carrying the torch. Vånna Inget keep it burning. Go see them next week at our It's a Trap! Clubnight at Debaser Malmö!

MP3: Knugen Faller - Lungen favoriter

This is kind of a catch-up post since I've been meaning to post about Knugen Faller for awhile, yet somehow manage to postpone it over and over. No more! Anyhow, Nancy's review sums it up pretty well, though I actually like it a lot more than she does. Truth: yes, this is a retro genre piece and as such, it steals shamelessly from acts of yore. However, I'm okay with that 'cuz they do it well. It's all about good songs played with copious energy, not originality and hey, they even get acclaimed jazz musician Jonas Kullhammar to lay down some sax so that's gotta mean something. If you like Randy, Regulations, or even The Hives, there's a damn good chance you'll like this too. 'Nuff said!

This record is a retro genre piece, a loving tribute to a time when ties were skinny, shoes were pointy, black jeans were so tight they hugged our calves, and you could still make a statement by dying your hair jet black. It's poppy punk that steals shamelessly from every riff you've ever heard - hey listen, it's the Ramones! It's the melody from "Positively 4th Street!" It's that three chord progression from every other pop-punk song from 1979! They note with pride that they play only instruments they do not know how to play and, as their Wikipedia entry wryly notes, "it shows." But so what if it has all the originality of a safety pin through the ear? It doesn't aim to be anything more and it's all that it strives to be - a fun fresh throwback to a loud fast and poppier time. Let's pogo!

Wasted Sounds will be releasing a new album from Umeå-based hardcore/crust/grind act Bingo this coming July. Listen to some tracks at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bingoume
In other Wasted Sounds news, keep an eye out for other new releases from bands like Sista Sekunden, Icos, Knugen Faller, Auktion, Sayyadina, Tysta Mari and more. Sweden's best punk label? Yeah, I'd say so. Nice to see such a diversity of acts too.
