Karin Dreijer Andersson (The Knife) and John Eriksson (Peter Bjorn and John) will be contributing b-side remixes to the new First Floor Power single "It's an interview". As mentioned last week, the group just signed to Danish label Crunchy Frog who will be releasing their new album "Don't back down!" on May 5.

First Floor Power has signed with Danish label Crunchy Frog who will be releasing the group's third album "Don't Back Down!" on May 5, their first sans Jenny Wilson who has since gone solo. Listen at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/firstfloorpower

First Floor Power will be making their first live appearance in quite some time at the Pop Dakar Festival on September 1 in Stockholm. It is not actually a reunion (as was suggested earlier and elsewhere), as the band never officially broke up and is continuing on nowadays as a three-piece with Sara Wilson and drummer Per Lager sharing vocal duties. The band is even working on a new record under the working title "Hits and shits" and have already recorded 16 tracks. Guests include ex-member Jenny Wilson along with Andreas Söderström (Ass) and Adam Kammerland (Pluxus).

In semi-related news, look for a new solo album from First Floor Power member Karl-Jonas Winqvist aka Blood Music this coming fall. Look for it around September/October.

MP3: First Floor Power - We are the people

I was watching the Musikbyrån 10-year special the other day (thanks Christoffer!) and amongst the bounty of footage was a short live clip of First Floor Power performing "We are the people". In that brief moment, I realized I knew exactly what song I had to post this Friday. I'm mostly ambivalent about First Floor Power's music, much preferring the more recent solo work of members Jenny Wilson and Karl-Jonas Winqvist aka Blood Music, but this song trumps 'em all. The base of the song is a shuffling beat and a ghostly four-note melody, upon which they pile layers of sound: a little squeezebox, some electronics, handclaps. When they take it to the chorus, the song explodes with heavy tremolo guitar and grand declarations. However, I think the lines that begin the verses are more crucial: "We are the people who tried to create something new / We are the people who tried to invent something true" High aspirations that deserve to be lauded.

NONS

Ashi Ali is another promising, beguiling talent for pop panache and at time captivating compositions built on piano. Judge Miss Ali on one song: "To bed" and she will own you. It could have been written by Damian Rice but, while the musical base is not a million miles away from The Tiny, it might be the crescendos? Indeed, Ali has a similarity in tone to Asa of Hell on Wheels and "Fire, fire" is surely the long lost First Floor Power epitaph? "These months" offers darting and swirling epic psyche. "Are you here soon" is a delicate little waltz meets country number, "Warm fronts" comes out of Portishead territory, "Somewhere else" could've been a Cardigans album classic. All impressive comparisons - it is a bit fraught at times, but musically deft - so when Ali decides her fuller path, she will be [even more] genius, because here are 11 smoldering teasers, and not a jot to hamper the Ali's credibility.
