I wasn't the only one impressed with the Samuraj Cities demo (see my original post here). Imperial Recordings (José González, Eskju Divine) wasted no time and quickly swept them up for their roster. The music is still quirky and lofi and imbued with that fantastic, dark sense of melody that made me appreciate the band in the first place. "Saturday night is never fair to everyone" doesn't quite reach the same level of despair as say, Broder Daniel, but it comes close. The vocals are more weary than anguished - just like as with yesterday's song from The Alpine, the song's protagonist is sick and tired of the same old shit. The approach is completely different, but the sentiment is the same.
Samuraj Cities - Saturday night is never fair to everyone
Eskju Divine could have made it big if they came from England, they've got the same sound as lots of bands over here, most of them derived from a love of Radiohead, or lately - Coldplay. It's unexciting, uninspiring and highly unoriginal, "Heights" is a collection of bland songs that feature "emotional" vocals that sound pretentious. I don't mind music like this now and then, if it's done in another more interesting fashion. Eskju Divine just tread boring territory that's been treaded many times over and they're just bringing another plain offering to the table of dullness. No thank you, I rather eat in silence!
- Simon Tagestam
I like Eskju Divine a lot, but I don't love them. Their epic melancholy rock is quite distinctive, not just for their unique instrumentation (keys/bass/drums), but also for frontman Gustaf Spetz's plaintive wail. I've always enjoyed the way his voice soars along with the music, complimenting eachother perfectly. So why isn't it a love-match? It's something I have a hard time justifying myself. I usually love dreamy pop like this, but it's almost too light and airy, so much so as the individual tracks tend to blend into one another. There are standouts such as the single "Hold on" which I've posted today, but when taken as a whole, the album "Heights" tends to be a bit too atmospheric for it's own good. I enjoy it fine whenever I have it on, but I have a hard time remembering any highlights. Taken one song at a time, it fares much better.
Eskju Divine - Hold on
Dead Frog Records has announced the signing of Swedish indiepop trio Nom de Guerre and will be putting the band's previously self-released album "La la la". The piano-bass-drums trio sounds a bit like Ben Folds as opposed to, say, Eskju Divine and we should hopefully have a review of it up here before too long. Listen to some samples here: http://www.nomdeguerre.se/
Swedish act Hearts of Black Science (as posted about here) have posted a new demo track on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/heartsofblackscience
A little less like Depeche Mode, a little more Eskju Divine.
