has posted a new track from Swedish postpunks Cut City for free download: http://www.deletedart.org/news.asp?newsID=113
The track is called "The sound and the sore" and it comes off the band's forthcoming full-length "Where's the harm in dreams disarmed" which, according to the band, will probably be their last.

To borrow the lexicon of the financial pages: I am downgrading Cold Cave to a Sell¹ while upgrading my rating on Agent Side Grinder to Strong Buy. I believe that Cold Cave's market has reached saturation and become overvalued while Agent Side Grinder has nowhere to go but up, especially considering the upcoming Q4 release of both "Irish recording tape" and "The transatlantic tape project" (via Enfant Terrible, vinyl-only). The former is of primarily interest to me, as it shows tremendous growth over last year's self-titled release and I must also commend them for the recruitment Alexander Blomqvist (on live bass) as he appears to have brought many new strengths with him to the executive team. The fine qualities that first caught my attention when I rated them a Buy (ie, the driving, dirty industrial beats) are still very much in place, only now far more refined and developed. I expect 2010 to be a very good year for Agent Side Grinder and don't expect them to face much serious competition for market share.
Now as for other companies in this sector, I'm downgrading Cut City from Buy to Hold as their stock appears to have stagnated recently, but am bullish on both Kite and Tamaryn.
¹ I really am selling Cold Cave. If you want a mint first-press copy of "Where trees grew and emotions died", give me a shout.
There are few genres that evoke such a strong connection with urban settings as post-punk -- from decaying factories and warehouses of Manchester to New York City streets littered with cigarette butts and shadows cast by streetlights and neon signs. While post-punk's claim of the metropolitan landscape has slipped in recent years with the rising popularity of remixes and the increasing prevalence of electronic music, Thieves Like Us have crafted a dark, creeping record that contains very few organic elements, evoking a strange marriage of Wire's "154" and the minimalist production existent throughout the Junior Boys' catalogue. In the near-absence of guitars, Thieves Like Us employ synthesizers and pads to create the atmosphere of "Play music" -- a menacingly ethereal tone on tracks like "An easy tonight" and "Program of the first part"; a dancehall-ready minimalism on "Drugs in my body" and "Miss you"; and a driving, mutedly violent desperation on "Your heart feels", the stand-out track on the album. Where Cut City's brand of post-punk oscillates between the atmospheric and the all-too-present, Thieves Like Us deconstruct pop songs, warping them into skulking, introspective shadows existing somewhere between the likes of Cut Copy and Gang of Four. The seductiveness of an album like "Play music" is in the strength of its skeletal nature, in the unvarnished and austere compositions, and in the breadth of emotion explored within this unembellished format -- all of which Thieves Like Us succeed and excel at. - Lars Garvey Laing-Peterson
This your final notice! Tomorrow at Debaser Malmö: Division of Laura Lee + Cut City. Not only is that a great lineup for our monthly It's a Trap! Clubnight, it's also the 10th anniversary party for Swedish music site Dagensskiva. As I've bemoaned before, I don't get to be there myself, but you can just pretend that I'm DSC editor Kal Ström -- he's a tad taller than me if I remember right and I might have more facial hair, but we both share the same kickass (lack of) haircut. Further enticement: the new Division of Laura Lee single which just happens to be the title cut off their most recent album "Violence is timeless". This is modern Gbg indie meets DC post-hardcore, live on stage in Malmö. A good time is guaranteed!
Reminder: this Saturday at Debaser Malmö is not just our monthy club night, it's also esteemed Swedish music website Dagensskiva's 10-year anniversary party. One of the band's providing the evening's entertainment: Cut City, Sweden's finest modern post-punk trio. I already talked up their new EP "Narcissus can wait", but that was months ago and I still don't think these guys are getting their due. "Xo echo", the closing track on said EP, reveals a far more brooding, more introspective side to the band, something you wouldn't necessarily detect from the upbeat, more aggressive tracks. Such is their lineage; there's just as much of The Cure in their sound as there is Joy Division, etc. Jagged rhythms give way to acoustic guitars, atmospheric synths, mallet percussion and deep expressions of sensitivity. Not going soft as much as they're allowing themselves to explore the full range of goth emotions. How will it play out on stage? Be there on Saturday to see for yourself.
If you were thinking of heading out to the It's a Trap! Clubnight/Dagensskiva 10-year anniversary party at Debaser Malmö on May 16 with Division of Laura Lee and Cut City, some additional details are posted here: http://dagensskiva.com/2009/05/05/10-arsfest-division-of-laura-lee-och-cut-city-pa-debaser-malmo-%E2%80%94-fira-med-oss/
It's a shame I can't be there myself, but y'know- thousands of miles between us and all that. But how about the coincidence of stellar local-to-me band Wolves in the Throne Room being reviewed today? The world is a smaller place than you might think!

Confirmed for It's a Trap! Clubnight on May 16: Division of Laura Lee! As if Cut City and Dagensskiva's 10th birthday wasn't enough, now we have Gbg's finest taking on the headliner spot. Hell yeah!
Just confirmed for the It's a Trap! Clubnight on May 16 at Debaser Malmö: not only do we have the fantastic Cut City taking the stage, but we're also helping our friends at Dagensskiva celebrate 10 years in the internet business. Naturally, we all know who the better site is, but hey - competition makes the market stronger, right? Anyhow, many (if not all?) Dagensskiva writers will be in attendance and I hear that some of them might even be spinning tunes, so it's sure to be a good time. And we all know how writers like to drink...
