I spent a good deal of time online yesterday reading heartfelt tributes to Ronnie James Dio, a man who was not only incredibly talented and blessed with a long career, but also much loved by everyone he came in contact with. The overwhelming consensus is that the man was one-of-a-kind, humble and friendly to everyone and well-worthy of his iconic status. I only saw him perform once (on the "Angry machines" tour circa '97 IIRC), but it made me a fan for life. I went in with absolutely no expectations and he put on the kind of performance that befits a man of his reputation, even though he at that point, quite far from the soaring heights of his earlier career. Speaking to other folks these past few days I know there's plenty other Dio fans out there who are missing him and, as you can hear from this mp3 post, his influence actually extends further than you might expect! EP's Trailer Park plays Americana-style folksy rock but, like many children of the 80s, he knew and loved Dio as a youngster: "It was 1984, I was ten years old and I was cycling to the ice rink in Visby for a hockey practice. I had a brand new yellow Sony Walkman and in it was a tape with Dio's debut album. I was wearing something that should resemble spandex pants (my mother had made them for me) and a denim jacket with a picture of the album cover of "Holy Diver" on the back. Hard rock and ice hockey was my entire world and Ronnie James Dio was god." I doubt he was the only one. This is Eric from EP's Trailer Park's tribute to the man, performed with backup support from Christian Kjellvander and recorded with Tobias Fröberg.

New tracks streaming at Skiva:
Moneybrother - We die only once (and for a very long time)
Jacob Felländer - Wrong
The former is the latest single from the popular Swedish artist and is described as a "lowbrow summer reggae tune." As for the second, it was produced by Christian Kjellvander and was written to accompany Jacob's photo exhibition "Choices" and his art-book "Stand Still - Drift Theories".
The recently reactivated Ep's Trailer Park finally have new music to share and have posted the song "Black heart" for streaming at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/epstrailerpark

Remember Bad Hands? Per Nordmark's new solo project? Y'know, the drummer from Fireside whose played with all sorts of Swedish elite such as Christian Kjellvander, Britta Persson and so on? Well, I've just been handed their eponymous single and I'm happy to be able to share it with you. Apparently a 10-track album with 10 different guest vocalists is on the way via NONS later this year and this particular track (which you might have already heard via myspace) features Nina Kinert on lead. Sound-wise, it's kind of what I'd expect from a Stockholm-based drummer-led project. Very krauty with a bit of artsy electro, not too dissimilar from Existensminimum (drummer/engineer Magnus Henriksson's solo project). Not very flashy either -- drummers understand it's the supporting players who make the difference, so they often remain in service of the song even when they take the helm. Of course, the beat still takes precedence, even if it's subtle. As a drummer myself, I'm really looking forward to hearing what else he'll come up with.

Swedish indie-folk act Nervous Nellie will release their new album "Ego & the id" on March 27. There will be a release party that day at Debaser Medis in Stockholm in the early evening with acts such as Shout Out Louds, Christian Kjellvander and Dag för Dag performing Nervous Nellie songs. Hear them play a few of their own songs themselves at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/nervousnellie
Check out Bad Hands, the new project from drummer extraordinaire Per Nordmark (Fireside, Christian Kjellvander, etc.): http://www.myspace.com/badhandssthlm
David Sandström contributes vocals to one song, Britta Persson another -- very recommended! (tack Marco for the insider info!)

If you've ever had the opportunity to see Christian Kjellvander in concert or have heard the live tracks off the "Introducing the past" collection, you know that he is an impressive performer. Whether he's playing solo, with a full band or alone with his wife Karla-Therese as is the case on today's track, his voice stands out, shining through in his rich, clear baritone. I'm most familiar with the Johnny Cash version of "Southern accents" from the "Unchained" album, but the track is actually a Tom Petty original and the title track to his 1985 album. Petty, as you'd expect, tends to sound a bit more pop/mainstream on the original and Cash lends it more of a gospel touch with his clear, booming diction and backing organ, however, the Kjellvanders make it their own by keeping things very subdued and very country. They also layer on a few exceptional bluegrass vocal harmonies, a subtle but important touch. Most importantly though, it's their show of restraint that separates them. Listen to either of the other two versions after this one and you might start thinking they're a bit too melodramatic and overwrought. It's certainly happening to me.
