MP3: The Tremolo Beer Gut - Every minute alone

Danish surf-rockers Tremolo Beer Gut cover fellow countrymates WhoMadeWho from their upcoming all-covers collection "Under the covers", due out in November via . Kind of a novelty tune, but hey, when you're dealing with an instrumental surf band, that's pretty much all you're gonna get. Still worth a listen though.

MP3: The Malpractice - Boss stallion

The Malpractice is the new solo project from Johannes Gammelby of I Am Bones/Beta Satan and "Boss stallion" is the latest single off the forthcoming album "Tectonics", due out October 25 via . I liked a couple I Am Bones songs, but was mostly ambivalent about the band overall; Beta Satan fare much better in my eyes due to the band's exemplary noisiness, whereas The Malpractice fall somewhere in between. This song in particular is quite good, despite my distaste for disco tropes to which I credit the beat emphasizing heaviness over funk. Seems to me, it aims for more an angular rock thing and nails it rather than poorly faking your standard Motown breaks. Elsewhere, the band seems to fall off a bit when Johannes loses focus, as was often the case with IAB, but whatever. We're in a new age of the single, right? Isn't that what they say?

Epo-555
Dexter fox
Crunchy Frog

Danish quartet Epo-555's debut album is a haunting mix of indie rock fueled by synthesizers and the occasional drum machine programming in the vein of mid-'90s Sub Pop band Six Finger Satellite and Belle and Sebastian. They craft these soundscapes out of vocalist/guitarist Max Hansen and Camilla Florentz (who also does vocals along with synth duties) breathy lyrics that takes the listener to a different dimension on "Angelina Balerina". Their vocals are nice and complimentary to the music itself, which flows from track to track in a cohesive manner (see tracks such as "L'art Pour La Fart" and "iL Presidente" as an example.) Good stuff, overall.

Sterling
Estadio camp-let
Crunchy Frog

I've never heard of Sterling before (pardon my ignorance), but judging from these 6 tracks, they might sport beards, and they're definitely Danish (or very wacky non-Danish people). This reminds me a lot of The Shins and the first stand-out track ("Ubesvarat Opkald") almost sounds like a The Shins cover, but sung in Danish (all of these songs are sung in Danish, fortunately it sounds ok). Now and then Sterling come across as a bit dated ("Koldbrand" sounds like some dodgy ballad from the 80s, and "Vinterfobi" has some quite tedious vocoder parts), but in general this EP is a bit above average, thanks to the first song.

Junior Senior
Hey hey my my yo yo
Crunchy Frog

To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from the follow-up to 2002's "D-d-don't stop the beat". Granted, I heard bits and pieces of Junior Senior's debut and got a good feel for what they were doing. It was fun, catchy and made you move. On their latest album, they take all of that and turn up the fun to 11. Combining late-'70s disco and '50s doo-wop harmonies was something I thought would never work, but they do a magnificent job of it, especially on tracks like "I like music", "No no no's" and "Ur a girl". With the addition of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson of The B-52's and Le Tigre doing lead and backing vocals - yes, that's Kathleen Hanna's voice doing lead vocals on "Dance, chance, romance"), it kept things very interesting. My brother sticks by his claim that this is "the happiest album I've heard all year." Definitely a winner.
