Red Tape update for June

In their latest news update Danish indie label/collective has announced they'll be doing a 7" with Danish post-punk legends Peter Peter Schneidermann (Sods, Sort Sol) and Fritz Fatal (Before, Mental Midget) later this year. The label also has plans for new albums from Papir and The City Kill, the first set for release in August, the latter set to be recorded later this month.

Bad Afro to repress Baby Woodrose on red vinyl

has announced that they'll be reissuing a couple OOP Baby Woodrose albums on limited vinyl on June 21: 2003's "Money for soul" and 2007's "Chasing rainbows". Both had original vinyl runs that are long gone, but this new batch will be 500 copies each on red.

Monday is Memorial Day

That means two things. First, there will be no repeat of my radio show, so if you want to listen, you'll need to tune in on Sunday (that's 11pm ET on Sirius XMU). Like always, I'll be playing a ton of great new music (The Bear Quartet, Dear Euphoria, Pan Sonic, Haust, etc.). Secondly, updates here will probably be pretty sparse as I'll hopefully be off doing other things besides sitting in front of the computer. Thanks!

Sound of Copenhagen the comp begets Sound of Copenhagen the label

Danish DJs and radio personalities Le Gammeltoft and Kjeld Tolstrup have decided to expand beyond their "Sound of Copenhagen" compilation series and have started a label under the same name. Their first signing, Hankat aka artist/producer Max Thelin, will release the new single "Be the first" in late June with the next edition (Vol. 5) of the eponymous comp series to follow in August.

"Ghost of a chance" to get expanded rerelease

No doubt hoping to capitalize on the recent Tiësto remix of "Trouble is", Danish act Turboweekend will be rereleasing their excellent "Ghost of a chance" album in a special 2CD edition featuring said remix added as a bonus track along with "De brikker der aldrig faldt på plads", a Danish-language duet with Steffen Brandt, a few other remixes and some live tracks from the band's show at Vega last April. The official release date for the new disc is June 7.

Torsten Larsen - The big payoffTorsten Larsen
The big payoff
Morningside Records

7

The subtitle to "The big payoff" should adequately prepare you for the contents of Torsten Larsen's (of Larsen & Furious Jane) album: "A collection of low-fidelity demos 2005-2008". This three-year period covers the time Larsen & Furious Jane spent on their exceptional album "Zen sucker". Demo recordings are typically the territory of diehards, those who want to hear the evolution of an artist's or a band's songwriting from the early drafts to the finished product, and there is an element of this on "The big payoff" -- the bare bones of tracks like "Tisminton" and "Oh, Perrey Reeves" may well prove only beneficial to serious Larsen & Furious Jane converts -- but there is also a decent amount of material that feels misplaced. Opener "Surrender" is among the strongest of these recordings, and one can't help but feel disappointed that it never found its way onto "Zen sucker". It's difficult to be terribly critical of "The big payoff": at its worst the recording acts a rough prequel to a fantastic album and at its best it feels like a collection of solid b-sides. The fact that is offering "The big payoff" for free doesn't hurt either.
