Zeigeist might be no more, but that's not stopping them from releasing more remixes. Their version of Universal Poplab's "I could say I'm sorry" (off the new "Uprising - The remixes" album) shows them at their best, taking a fairly typical EBM track and upping the pop/electro aspects. Soften the edges, smooth it out, streamline it. Add some squiggly 80s electro sound effects, a bit of vocoder - retro without being overtly so, exactly the kind of thing that gained Zeigeist popularity in the first place (once you got past the clever distro scheme). It slightly diminishes the angst of the lyrics by cannibalizing the chorus, but that's fine because it's far more dancefloor-friendly as a lighthearted romp. Besides, the melody is strong enough to carry it through regardless.

Universal Poplab's upcoming remix album "Uprising - The remixes" has been confirmed for release on November 30 via Wonderland Records. Artists contributing include Zeigeist, Neuropa and Code 64.

Look for a new remix album from Universal Poplab in October. The band is also working on their third album and will be performing their very first show in Russia in September.

If only the music was original it would make up for the very 2006/7 poor Euro beat and over styling. Universal Poplab are not kitsch enough to be camp, yet still manage to make bad rainbow pop. In fact, let's just lump them in with Slagsmålsklubban, Lo-fi-fnk (yes, darlings they may be) and invite them to start a study group researching Gunther & the Sunshine Girls because on this strength this record, Universal Poplab are out sailing (and those named are a smoke and mirrors). The lyrics are as infantile as this review: "very end is the beginning of a new beginning... end is near a new beginning and it's end, going on and on and on." Horrific.

Got a nice big box of new CDs from Wonderland Records yesterday - new releases from Emmon, Depressive Art and Universal Poplab as well as Redlight's debut record. "I could say I'm sorry but I'm not / Whatever I promised I forgot" That's got to be one of the most cold-hearted lines ever and it's made even colder on this Jens Lodén remix. He drags down the tempo and strips away the lead synth melody, letting the vocals carry the song all by their lonesome. They're also the loudest thing on the track and left raw so they stick out even more. I like the original a lot, but this makes the lyric more brutal and impossible to ignore. I love the way the churning bassline segues into distortion for the chorus, too. The video proves the band doesn't always take themselves 100% seriously, a virtue I always appreciate, but you'd never know it from hearing this alone.
