Thomas Dybdahl
One day you'll dance for me, New York City
EMI

This is 24 year old Norwegian Dybdahl's third long player. Taking hints from Ed Harcourt and Bright Eyes, the palette from which he paints from is both fragile and weary. "It's always been you" is a heartfelt weepie that features whispered breathy vocals and a gorgeous piano refrain, all drenched in subtle strings. Title track "One day you'll dance for me, New York City" has an underlying country feel to it with a gently picked banjo, whilst Dybdahl's lyrics are concerned with typical outsiderdom. The young Norwegian doesn't anything new or different on this record, he's just a great songwriter.

Copenhagen Records has licensed the new album "One Day You’ll Dance For Me New York City" from Norwegian singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl for a Danish release on January 10.

Thomas Dybdahl
A love story CDS
EMI

Thomas Dybdahl is a 24 years old singer/songwriter from Norway who looks like a pretentious hipster on his websites. His work can placed within the same category of music that has utterly swamped the Nordic countries the last few years (nowadays, for every Kristofer Åström you get twenty lousy impersonators). These facts alone (combined with the title of the actual song that this review is about) inflamed the prejudices buried deep within me to such a degree that if I hadn't taken a deep breath, sat down, and listened to the song, this review would have been nothing but a deep sigh full of cynic remarks. Now instead it'll read like this: This first single of Thomas Dybdahl's forthcoming album is a lush and gentle affair, with nothing subversive about it, that lulls along nice and quietly. Yes, it's singer/songwriter stuff in the usual way, but it's stuff done in a much better fashion than what I'm used to hear.
- Simon Tagestam

The tracklist for Norwegian singer/sonwriter Thomas Dybdahl's new album "One day you'll dance for me, New York City":

01. One day you'll dance for me, New York City
02. If we want it, it's right
03. A love story
04. Solitude
05. It's always been you
06. Don't lose yourself
07. Babe
08. Henry
09. Piece

It comes out on October 18.

Thomas Dybdahl's third album from his October trilogy, "One day you'll dance for me New York City", will be released on October 18. The first single is called "A love story" and is only being released on its own as a digital download via musiconline.no and should be available now. The track was written for and is featured on the soundtrack for the film "Monstertorsdag" which was directed by Arild Ornmundsen. Unfortunately, the trailer isn't online yet, but you can find out more about the movie here: http://www.monstertorsdag.no/

The Glitterhouse website has a bunch of great free downloads online, including The Ricochets, Helldorado, Thomas Dybdahl and more: http://www.glitterhouse.com/index.asp?lang=e&mode=downloadlist&rnd=3%2C814334E-02=&incs=false

Some of Norway's finest musicians, Lars and Martin Horntveth, Thomas Dybdahl, Nikolai Eilertsen and Morten Qvenild, have joined forces in a new band called The National Bank and will be making their live debut at the Øya Festival in Oslo on August 13. The debut album comes out August 16 and here's what the fest organizers had to say about 'em:

This is a goodie that'll blow up like a bomb when people get to hear the material. Who the members are isn't all that important, but the songs are. Every jaw at the Öya booking office dropped when we sat listening to demos and heard The National Bank through the speakers for the first time. What a glorious sound! This only confirms that a lot of Norwegians must have a special gene for melancholy that the rest of the world lacks. And we don't necessarily mean the sad kind of melancholy, but the gentle, lovely blend of sweet and sour. And no, it's not totally unbearable to be sitting indoors while the wind is blowing and the rain is pouring down if you can get to listen to this. Every song has vocals that will go straight to your heart, the string section will make your hair stand on end, and the backing vocals will make you want to hug somebody.

Norwegian singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl together with Nils Erga of Noxagt have produced the soundtrack for the upcoming film "Monstertorsdag". It hits theatres on October 9. Also coming in October from Thomas will be his brand new full-length album. More details when I get them. His 2002 album ""....That Great October Sound" will get a European release on June 26 via Glitterhouse.
