MP3: Baby Woodrose - Countdown to breakdown

Trying hard to stay positive on music posts this week, and boy am I struggling. Good thing I've got more quality hard rock to share though, because without it, I'd be at near-zero. So yeah, keep holding on for the hate to come next week; until then here's a cut from the new self-titled Baby Woodrose album, their sixth overall. I've only been so-so on the last few Woodrose records and the same goes for Mr. Lorenzo Woodrose's various side endeavors (The Setting Son, Dragontears), but this new disc is totally solid. Maybe not quite a year-end contender, but whatever, I'll take pure listening enjoyment over the stacks of plastic garbage littering my office and will be content, thankyouverymuch. Soundwise, don't expect any big surprises though; as with all Bad Afro releases, this falls well within their usual standard classic/retro/garage rock spectrum. "Countdown to breakdown" psychs it up a bit at least, adding a few backing aahs, tasteful tremolo leads and a smattering of backwards guitar, all while dropping small hints of bad-trips to come. Like I said, totally solid.

MP3: The Setting Son - Spring of hate

Spring of hate? All I know is that it snowed here on Saturday and that is so not okay this close to April, certainly at this longitude. I don't think anymore, much less The Setting Son, can adequately express my displeasure at the failure of the seasons to turn. Still, it's a catchy little number and I can appreciate the fact that they mine the more ominous side of 60s psychrock revivalism. Hard to back that squeaky voice though, that's a tough one.

Fully embracing the dark side of 1960s psychedelic rock, The Setting Son's self-titled debut album is a strange trip, but one worth embarking on. Combining the sounds of early Rolling Stones with the very distinctive Scandinavian take on garage rock, this record doesn't take breaks and doesn't need breathers. With a Phil Spector-like approach to the layering of their music, The Setting Son build their songs from jangled, thin guitar lines, warm keys, thick organs, the deep, percussive elements of the bass and drums, and Sebastian T.W. Kristiansen's strained, fitting vocal delivery. The Black Lips sound like they have studied the approach of 60s rock bands and carefully reconstructed the delivery; The Setting Son craft their music with such youthful, raw energy that the songs feel more like lost cousins of that iconic era instead of a talented resurrection of melodies lost in time's cruel passage.
