Figurines prep new EP

Danish indie act Figurines will be releasing the new 5-song EP "Lucky to love" next month as a precursor to their upcoming album, due out in the fall. The title track will serve as the forthcoming album's lead single and there will be one other track ("Poughkeepsie") that will appear on said album in a slightly different version. As for the rest of the songs, there's one unreleased track ("Drag the mood") from the "When the deer wore blue" sessions, a cover of fellow Danes The Mopeds ("Television time") and an REM cover ("New Orleans instrumental no. 1") which originally appeared on a Stereogum comp.

I've always held a soft spot in my heart for Tigerbombs, mostly as a damned fun summer band, though Pepe Trouble's solo act took me by surprise: not only in solidifying his songwriting amongst the strongest summer-pop work out there, but also by branching out his pop craftsmanship along more serious avenues. With a truly all-star Scandinavian cast, including Astrid Swan, Samae Koskinen (of Sister Flo), and Sweden's The Mopeds, amongst many, many others, King of All the Animals is a talented collection of tried and tested musicians, and "Paper beats rocks" is even further testament to this statement. Instead of the Caesars (Palace)-like tact that Tigerbombs adopt -- chock full of rock organ hooks and fills -- King of All the Animals is a much more typically Scandinavian pop group. "1000-mile-heartache" feels like it fell straight out of a 80s coming-of-age film, a Modern English vibe wrapped around an almost Shout Out Louds-type delivery. "Everything burns red" bristles with perfect guitar hooks and the layered, saturated approach that Moonbabies have perfected. There are a few stumbles on the record, all of which are easily forgiven (and almost more easily forgotten as one become more familiar with the album), and none of which even mildly threaten to derail this proficient and entertaining work. Listen to "The Cologne beat" and you'll know exactly where all my excitement for "Paper beats rock" comes from.

Nom De Guerre
La la la
Dead Frog Records/self-released

I've never heard of this band before, so this listening to this record was a nice little surprise. Avi compared these fellows to Ben Folds Five, which is very fitting. They also inhibit some of the quirkiness of The Mopeds, (both bands are Swedish all-male trios as well), and they sound like a lot Swedish indie bands did in the late 90s. I loved a lot of those bands, but with it now being almost 2007, this is what I don't really like with this album. Even though they've got pretty good songs, they unfortunately come across as really dated. Hopefully Nom De Guerre will sound a bit more up to date on their next album (I know, that sounds almost iconoclastic of me), produce some (even) better songs and improve their lyric writing skills (sometimes the rhymes are disastrous). If all this happened, I think they could produce something pretty, pretty good.

Either way it is immaterial when we put "Mopeds + Review" in the same bracket - you see, you'll know The Mopeds are no upstarts. It can be said they’re a well respected non-Stockholm band. They feature majestic trombonist and everyone's favourite producer/horn player Jens Lindgård (Bob Hund, The Cardigans, Eggstone, Tom Jones, Roxette, Ulf Lundell, St. Etienne, and many more. More recently you have heard them play with the band David & the Citizens and Damn!). Just Google "Jens Lindgård" for a long list of credits. The new disc, what's the deal?
No bloody idea. Have not listened!
Let's guess. The lazy taglines have them alongside fellow Pågs Brainpool and Eggstone, but we know The Mopeds will have gone all McFly on us instead! Mopeds parked up outside the US embassy of radio pop, MTV indie but then with attention to detail "Fortissimo" won't be knocked. They occupy peer status – check that list up above again.
"Fortissimo" will be fast, it'll be furious, it'll mess with your days and fill your nights. That's if you are done with first and second albums "The hills are alive with the sound of mopeds" or "The land of the three" - because without listening, rest assured the review will read positive. There are some things you can rely on.

Couldn't have said it much better myself, and I've actually heard the damn thing. Download a choice track from "Fortissimo" over on the right.
