We're not the only ones commemorating a birthday this week; Göteborg-based booker/show promoter Parapluie turned 3 and celebrated by throwing themselves a party and Jonas Lyckander also took the time to answer a few questions as part of our ongoing Gbg Spotlight Series.
So it was your birthday this week - how was the celebration?
We had a great night at Pusterviksbaren in Gothenburg! The Deer Tracks, Jonathan Johansson (just signed for Hybris) and We Are Soldiers We Have Guns gave us the best of pop!
So you've been booking indie/pop shows for 3 years now - how healthy do you think the scene is in Gbg? How do you think it compare to the way it was 3 years ago?
I think the indiescene in Gothenburg is pretty good right now. We have lots of nice venues and a bunch of dedicated club/promoters that bring nice bands/DJs to town.
Three years ago the scene for indiebands was smaller. Now there are shows almost every night where you can go and hear new music. That's good.
Likewise, how do you think the Gbg scene compares to other cities in Sweden or elsewhere? Is there anything in particular that makes Gbg special? Is there anything it is lacking?
I like Malmö. Malmö is the Swedish Berlin! Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö have tehri own scenes and they are pretty
different from eachother.
The scene in Gothenburg is open and friendly for new acts. Not too much attitude.
Who's your favorite local act right now?
My friends in Fantasikrig are great! They will do a show at Klubb Populär @ Storan in Gothenburg next saturday. It will be nice.
Do you have a song from them you'd like to share?
Check them out at myspace:

The new myspace music is a total shitsystem, but I did manage to grab a track for reposting. Check it out below.

"Yes this is my broken shield", the opener to The Deer Tracks' debut record, is a track that could easily have overshadowed the rest of the album. And while "Aurora" never again reaches the stellar heights of the closing minutes of "...broken shield", the band has plenty of other avenues to explore. The electronic production on "Aurora" is nothing short of fantastic, combining the glitchy with the organic, folding the vocals and guitars effortlessly into the mix, and creating dense, lavish compositions that effortlessly span the emotional range from triumphant to melancholic. Strangely, there are only little touches to connect this project to David Lehnberg's previous bands (Leiah, Ikaros, Ariel Kill Him), with far more connections drawn to acts such as Four Tet, the Notwist, Sigur Rós' "Ba ba ti ki di do" and Mew. "Aurora", despite the range of its influences, is a distinctively Scandinavian, if not characteristically Swedish, record -- showing beauty to be both a thing of wonder and tragedy, and effortlessly so. As I wrote for "Yes this is my broken shield", The Deer Tracks have raised the bar. "Aurora" is one of the great albums of 2008.
- Lars Garvey Laing-Peterson
Today's mp3 post comes courtesy of Lars Garvey Laing-Peterson:
Combining the distinct feel of Scandinavian electronic music championed by The Radio Dept. with a skeletal construction similar to those utilized by Four Tet and the Notwist, "Yes this is my broken shield", the opening track from The Deer Tracks' debut "Aurora", leisurely builds on its layers of instrumentation until the inertia generated erupts into one of the most wonderful closing segments I've heard in a while. At first, beeps are overlaid with glockenspiel notes, then with pads and subtle percussion, then vocals, all slowly augmenting, gradually gathering momentum. From this beautiful, humble, almost ambling foundation, "Yes this is my broken shield" transforms delicately into a epic outburst rivaling the finest tracks from M83's seminal "Before the dawn heals us". Its energetic, anthemic ending seems alien to its ethereal inception, though there is no sudden break, no sharp detours, no cheap tricks. The Deer Tracks effortlessly and seamlessly string their composition together. The Deer Tracks have raised the bar. Other acts should take note.

People of Malmö! Tomorrow night, September 13 at Debaser: The Deer Tracks! Not to be missed!
Just confirmed for the It's a Trap! Clubnight at Debaser Malmö on September 13: The Deer Tracks. We actually had Repoman booked to play as well, but their drummer who does double-duty in The Change was already confirmed for a different show. Kind of a bummer since I thought that was an amazing lineup, but it should be a great show regardless - as I've said countless times, The Deer Tracks were one of my favorite bands at Hultsfred. And yes, Repoman and The Deer Tracks would indeed work well! It isn't obvious, but TDT come from a hardcore/DIY background.
The Deer Tracks now have a video for the track "Slow collision": http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=41260615
I'm still not blown away by their album "Aurora", but they were definitely one of the best acts I saw at Hultsfred.

This track is all about the wordless refrain. It sucks you in on the first listen, at least that's the way it worked on me when I heard it live. The persistence of the melody burrows it deep inside my skull, though none of the transmutations every match the quiet beauty of the solo voice. On the other hand, the majesty of the full band carrying the line at the song's peak is quite powerful as well. Finally, David Lehnberg has achieved the epic sound he's been searching for! Ariel Kill Him came close, but was bogged down by trying too hard, trying to do too much. The Deer Tracks hold more back and thus are able to go further. Still, as much as I enjoy "Aurora", the record doesn't match the band's live performance. They blew me away at Hultsfred, but they aren't nearly as dynamic or powerful here. I remain a fan, but my enthusiasm has waned ever so slightly.

It appears the The Deer Tracks' upcoming record "Aurora" is being held captive by Finnish label Next Big Thing. The band signed with them back in December, but keeps finding the release date getting pushed back further and further with the label becoming increasingly distant. The release of The Deer Tracks' forthcoming debut album "Aurora" has been delayed, but they've posted a new track on myspace to make the wait go easier: http://www.myspace.com/thedeertracks
The Deer Tracks, the electronica duo of David Lehnberg (Ariel Kill Him, Ikaros) and Elin Lindfors, has confirmed that their debut album will be called "Aurora". As mentioned before, it will be released in February via Next Big Thing.
