MP3: Sophie Zelmani - Yeah, okey

Even though the goofy Swenglish spelling of "Yeah, okey" sets the editor part of my brain on fire¹, the track was an immediate highlight for me as I dug into Sophie Zelmani's new album "The ocean and me". It's an internal dialog between the singer and the demons in her head. It starts: "Darkness, if I'm gonna spend all my time with you / You've got to be my friend / If I wanna be all alone with you / I've got to feel your hand" Does that sound copasetic to you? Granted, she does allow for light and love to be let in, but when she asks what she can do for the Darkness, that's what really worries me. I won't be in the way? Not okay. Save me from my crazy mind? Sounds like it might be too late.

¹Okay and okej are fine, okey is not. My fingers almost refuse to type it.

Sophie Zelmani - Yeah, okey

MP3: Elin Ruth Sigvardsson - The war

Elin Ruth Sigvardsson desperately wants to be the next Sophie Zelmani. Trouble is, she lacks the gravitas to pull it off. She's got the trapping of the genre down with that haunted guitar and vocal and those despondent lyrics, but I don't buy it. Elin is far too nice sounding to be convincing. I don't want to be completely disparaging though - Elin does fine as a pop artist and I really do like the new single "Antidote", but the further she reaches, the more she falls short. What makes "Antidote" work is the unexpected irony of such a sweet girl singing about revenge and murder. The music gets darker to match and my attention wanes. Know your strengths!

MP3: Christel Alsos - What you gotta do

I can't help it. I see an album cover like this and I immediately brace myself for some weak MOR bullshit. That's usually what you get with a headshot of a pretty face. Maybe some watered-down country at best. However, as I'm sure you can surmise considering I'm posting about it today, that is most definitely not the case. Christel Alsos is a Norwegian singer/songwriter with the restrained elegance of Sophie Zelmani and the angelic intonation of Jeff Buckley. On the other hand, her voice is a bit darker and huskier than either of them, so sometimes she gives off a slightly more soulful vibe. All the more reason that I'm incredibly disappointed her duet with fellow Norwegian artist Thomas Dybdahl appears to have been removed from YouTube.
I don't listen to many of the chart-topping Scandinavian artists because I want to; I do it as a public service, because I feel I have to. Let me tell you, it can be dreary. Sometimes, such as when I discover someone like Christel Alsos, it's totally worth it.

Christel Alsos - What you gotta do
