MP3: Sophie Rimheden - Happy

The tracks on the new Sophie Rimheden album with all the guest spots from Sweden's current crop of "hot" rappers (Adam Tensta, Form One, Aaron Phiri, etc.) only serve to distract from the better tracks on the album that are all her own. Actually, that's not 100% true as the lead single "Go away" is dece, but I really do like her own solo tracks best. Case in point: "Happy". Fun like a carnival, sharp like cheddar and, uh, infectious like a cold. Or something like that. Anyhow, it does what it needs to do which is attempt to reinforce Rimheden's place as Sweden's reigning electropop queen. A couple years ago she had that honor down solid, these days competition is fierce - Firefox AK and Karin Ström ain't no slouches. Watch your back!

This latest offering from Sophie Rimheden wades deeper into experimental fields with reasonable success. Her sweet melodic voice is backed up with support from dark and unlikely places, most notably by Swedish hip-hop artist Aaron Phiri on the first track to be released from this album, "Go away". This pairing of soft and sweet with hard-edged hip-hop is surprising and played out to nice effect, without overdoing it. Other stand-out tracks include "Stay the night" and title track "Travel". The whole album reaches a tricky balance of sticking closely to a theme without ever becoming repetitive.

As the first song of the album goes: Nu händer det igen ("It is happening again"). A Scanian artist takes the special Scanian accent and makes it into an integral part of the music. Originally from Hässleholm, the same town that gave us Sophie Rimheden and Andreas Tilliander, one-man band Familjen gives us yet another electro hero. Filled with playfulness, without rose-eyed 80s nostalgia, Familjen feels very modern. He blends naive 80s melodies, 90s beats and 00s glitches into a cohesive whole. That combined with his squealing 303s and subtle guitars makes it all sound like it was recorded tomorrow. Album standout (and former IAT MP3 Of The Day) "Det snurrar i min skalle" should become one of the biggest hits of the summer, but the album is filled with songs almost as good. Finally, the lyrics must be mentioned. Familjen has a way with words, and has a knack for finding phrases that catch on. Music you can dance to, plus makes you think? Shocking!
