Instead of our typical Göteborg-related post this week, we're taking an entirely different approach by asking an outsider to look in. Our guest: Sir Eric Beyond of Sir Eric Beyond and the Avant-garde.
For the record, what city do you call home?
We call Stockholm our home.
So, when was the last time you were in Gbg?
We were in Gbg in December and played at Preview festival. It was arranged by the great label Kning Disk.
What's your impression of the city, its people and its music?
It's a great city for underground music, and the audience seems much more interested in alternative pop music than the Stockholm music scene. That is probably not true, but they seem happier.
Do you think that there's a particular Gbg sound? If so, how would you describe it?
Yeah there is something in the way of singing that lots of Gbg bands have. Some perfect mixture of stupidity, "I dont give a fuck-attitude" and pure joy. Gbg bands are more "real". We, Sir Eric Beyond and the Avant-garde, the creme de la creme in Stockholm, take pride in being fake. Which is very real to us.
BUT, I think there are many more girls making interesting (and crap) music in Stockholm, I am more interested in listening to that. Damn, I wish that I was a girl...
When you think of bands/artists from Gbg, who is the first to come to mind?
The first Gbg artist that comes to my mind is Dishdishdance, she, Malin Dahlström had a brilliant performance with dancers at the festival where we played. She rocks. Don't know if she recorded anything. The two little songs on myspace wasn't even close to what I heard live. Totally different story.
Lastly, what exactly are you working on right now?
NOW I am building a four meter high catapult that I'm going to use for shooting crap on the parliament building in Stockholm in April, to protest against Swedish weapons export.
We are also makin new music that will be released maybe this year, maybe next.

Sir Eric Beyond's "Democracy" was first released as a single in 2005, but since it was also an album track in 2006, it qualifies for my best-of-the-year list. I guess you could call this "protest-rock", a genre woefully lacking today despite the current world situation, but really - it's so, so much more. If you haven't heard it yet, it's probably best that I let you stumble in unaware because Sir Eric defies easy explanation and the element of surprise works in his favor. Can you believe that this was actually nominated for a P3 award?

I've always been a fan of male vocalists with really high voices. From Jon Anderson to Thom Yorke to Daniel Smith, there's something really compelling about both naturally high pipes as well as falsettos stretched to the max. So when Avi described Eric Beyond as having such a voice, I was immediately interested. And this self-titled release does not disappoint. It's a curious blend of styles, mostly a kind of proggy psychedelia with both pop and musical theatre underpinnings. Remarkably, the disc is only half an hour long, yet the instrumental passages (and a few tunes like "Seabisquit" are entirely instrumental) unquestionably recall the halcyon days of '70s prog; you can hear a bit of Yes, Faust and others in the arrangements. On "If this is the way", Beyond sings "If this is the way everything is falling apart/I want it to happen," going to the upper reaches of his falsetto on that latter phrase. You almost hold your breath listening to it. The pretty piano ballad "Shadows" also gives him a chance to go up, up and away, while on the uptempo "I don't follow", great bass and percussion work (and the guitar parts dazzle throughout) share impact with the hilarious lyric "I got to admit it, I can't listen to you/Cause you're consuming too much contemporary Cul-CHUR," Beyond singing the last syllable high and, uh, outside. Big fun! There's a couple of almost-normal indie-pop kinda songs here like "One of those days", but most of this is willfully eccentric stuff, and if you can't take that voice, you'll be weirded out immediately. Me, I dug the heck out of this; it really doesn't sound much like anything else, and I wish it had been twice as long.

Sir Eric Beyond and the Avant-Garde. It's a ballsy move to knight yourself and name your backing band after an art movement. Especially for someone who sings so damn high. I've been waiting for Eric's debut full-length for awhile now and, while I understand that his music is not for everyone, I feel it is my duty to make everyone a convert. It's way more fey and twee than anything I'd normally listen to, but it's also silly, playful and much smarter than first impressions let on. I know I probably sound like hypocrite having criticized The Concretes for their amateurism earlier this week, but that aesthetic can work if done right. The difference is that The Concretes are trying to be better than their abilities permit and Eric Beyond, on the other hand, doesn't seem to care so much about getting things right as much as having the proper feel and feeling. The funny falsetto is a red herring - listen more carefully and you'll get it.
