Oh, Scraps of Tape. The critical success of this album means that it is tempting to trash, but I am not going to be one to rain on their parade. Delicate, yet intricate notes, phrases and melodies bloom into a huge resonance of sound and beats. It is the beating of your heart that matches the rhythm of the guitars as it does its sway dance. They live by repetition and also the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' doctrine. The drums come in at the moment the song cries out for drums. But it's the hardness that explodes so suddenly and powerfully that distinguishes this post-rock band. The only stumble in this marathon is the underdeveloped lyrics at times forcing its way into the song prematurely or too late. This dizzy dance should never end, but when it does, you're satisfied.

MP3: The Bear Quartet - Portrait painter

This week's Bear Quartet post comes courtesy of Johan Gustavsson. Johan plays in a shit-ton of various bands including Scraps of Tape, Tsukimono, Alina and Conduo Orchestra to name a few. SoT just released the excellent album "This is a copy is this a copy" and is on tour as we speak. Alina and Tsukimono have new records on the way, as do a few of the other projects he's involved in. Needless to say, he's a busy guy, but somehow to found time to reminisce on the mighty BQ:

"Gay icon" was the first BQ album I ever listened to as a whole and by my own will.
Up until then, my brother David used to play BQ to me once in a while, proclaiming that they were/are the best Swedish band ever and so on... I have infinite trust in David's musical knowledge and taste, so after a while I bought "Gay icon" and when "Portrait painter" came on I was blown to pieces. The lyrics just make me shudder and wipe a tear every time... thank you.

"Gay icon" was my first Bear Quartet album, too. Download "Portrait painter" below.

Tenderversion Recordings will be releasing limited 3" CDs from both Audrey and Scraps of Tape in the near future. The Audrey disc will feature two previously unreleased tracks and Scraps will feature a 15-minute epic that was too much to tack onto their most recent album "This is a copy this is a copy". I'm not sure of the release date, but I'll definitely try to track down more than a few copies for resale.

MP3: Scraps of Tape - Death as it should be

My recurring complaint about post-rock: it's almost never heavy enough. You'd think that wouldn't be a problem for a genre whose entire raison d'etre is based upon epic build-ups, but it's the sad ugly truth. I've heard way too many pieces that fall just short of awesomeness and it drives me crazy. Just when you think they'll kick it up that extra notch, they wimp out. So anticlimatic! Thankfully Scraps of Tape, young upstarts that they are, are not afraid of wielding such power. This is the opening track from "This is a copy is this a copy" (due out tomorrow and available in the webstore) and there's no mistaking that they mean business from the get-go. There's plenty of introspective parts with beautiful melodies elsewhere on the record, but I'm all about the loud bludgeoning parts today. The end, when they take it up to an even higher notch that you didn't think was possible, totally gives me a Beevis & Butthead "Yes!" moment every time I hear it. I may not be a teenage metalhead anymore, but I can't disregard my past.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Andrew is a smart dude. Listen to what he says.

Got a nice big box of new CDs from Wonderland Records yesterday - new releases from Emmon, Depressive Art and Universal Poplab as well as Redlight's debut record. I've also finally made the new Scraps of Tape album "This is a copy is this a copy" available for preorder. Either click the direct links under 'What's new' on the right or head to the main storefront right here.
