Despite a few exceptional songs, Samtidigt Som's debut album falls flat. Too many tracks following the same formula, too many similar tempos, beats and melodies -- after a while even the standouts become interchangeable. The best Göteborg-style indierock is equal parts extreme euphoria and despair; Samtidigt Som does a fine job nailing the sound, but can't keep up the feeling and never quite reaches the outer limits. Mighty promising, yes, but not there yet.

There's a lot of new bands exploring the sound of classic Gbg indierock -- Samtidigt Som and Kusowsky are two I've covered -- but Samuraj Cities are really the only band I've heard in that vein that are taking the classic blueprints and pushing them in new directions. It's the same familiar melodies and epic melancholia, the same chest-thumping anthems, but the sound is something completely different. Samuraj Cities have always been aurally distinct from the very beginning, but when I listen to the single "Spoonful of talk" and hear them break into the massive chorus, I know they're on to some next-level shit. They go far beyond the typical guitar-bass-drums-vocals instrumentation, continually adding layers and layers of sound without ever losing focus. The guitars swarm like bees and scream like sirens. I didn't even notice the lack of bass on first listen until it dropped in and made my jaw drop. I declare: They've always been a good band; now they're heading towards greatness. Pay attention!

Eh, forget about a typical Friday mp3 post - there's too much new music worth talking about. I've posted about Gbg indierockers Samtidigt Som numerous times already, but they have a new single out and of course it's great. It's also not much of a departure from their last one, but I'm okay with that as long as they keeping doing what they do and keep doing it well. There's such a powerful youthful exuberance to their music that I find irresistible. So loud, brash and so full of life -- this is where indie and punk reunite. The impact might not be as monumental as when "Känn ingen sorg..." was first released, but the feeling behind it is the same. I can only imagine how much fun they must be live.
