Paper to get re-release in coop w/Imperial Recordings

Imperial Recordings has partnered with fellow Swedish label Novoton is a joint deal to re-release the excellent album "An object" from Kraut/postpunk act Paper on February 10, 2010. Said album will be repackaged in new artwork and will be available on both CD and, at long last, vinyl.

Paper - Live in NYC (video)

Postpunks Paper have rounded up a few decent-quality YouTube links with footage of their recent NYC performances: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=64764246&blogId=496287355

MP3: Kap Kap - Saigon

The a-side of Kap Kap's self-titled debut EP is actually the weakest link; "Fullmooner" (along with the better/expanded Bangkok Impact remix of the same) offers up a proggy funk instrumental that devolves into a disco jam, something that I imagine is about a thousand times more fun to play than it is to listen to. It's not entirely without its charms as much as it is forgettable, but holy moly, the three cuts on the flip more than make up for it. The meandering psychrock gets shelved in favor of a side-long Krautrock workout full of endlessly building riffs and the kind of sweet repetition repetition repetition that very few bands can successfully pull off. "Saigon" takes things nice and slow, starting with the bass. It's a full sound, with a deep tone and a rough edge. The rest of the band comes on slowly doing call-and-response, while the rhythm section pushes onward. A mid-section build-up gives way to strings and surprises and again, the rhythm section keeps slogging forward. It's the flipside to Paper's high-anxiety postpunk; the same circular style, but stretched out and worn down. The other two b-side cuts are similarly great, but this one is definitely the high-water mark.

Paper - Live @ the Cakeshop, NYC, 03/04 - 03/06/2009Paper
Live @ the Cakeshop, NYC, 03/04 - 03/06/2009

Making their live debut in the US, Stockholm's Paper celebrated with a three-night stint, of which I caught two, at the most appropriate small venue in the city for their style -- the Cakeshop. Bringing unbound energy and punk fury, yet cool and sophisticated, Paper showed the audiences what has been missing from modern punk music, the attitude. They upped the tempo of tracks from their two albums (recorded simultaneously, with the second due for release later this year) with tracks like "Out of it into it", "My life is going under" and "She's got lard". On the third night, singer/keyboardist Calle Olsson complained of illness prior to the show, however showed no discomfort whatsoever when onstage -- the sign of the consummate performer. The crowd was definitely feeling the passion and applauded fervently, and with a great live debut such as these, I hope to see Paper back here very soon.

MP3: Paper - Out of it into it

Swedish postpunks Paper beging their 3-day run at the Cake Shop in NYC tonight so I tried my best to pin them down for a short Q&A. Calle Olsson answers on behalf of the group...

So what's up with the three-day stand? Whose idea was that? Are you gonna switch things up from night to night or what? Do you guys have any expectations for how it's gonna go?

We thought it was time for something new and wanted to go to New York. We got in touch with a promoter here who set up these gigs. Yeah, we'll change the sets night from night, maybe an easier set the first night, so that nerves can be calmed, It's gonna go well and hopefully we'll meet a lot of nice New Yorkers.

Got any other plans while you're over here? Anything in particular that you are looking forward to doing or seeing?

We've seen Coney Island which was magic, we've also eaten lots of good food.

What else is going on in Paper's world? Got plans to release something new anytime soon?

We will release something soon I hope, but we'll know more after Friday night. Right now we are focused on doing the best shows ever.

When will that new Audionom record finally be released? I heard like 30 seconds of it this past summer and it sounded nuts. What's the hold up?

We don't know.

Likewise, what's going on with the long-awaited Bear Quartet record? A new BQ release used to be an annual occasion and now...?

We are planning a release this autumn. The reason for the holdup is that there was either time or money, important stuff for BQ...

Paddington DC seems to be awfully prolific these days - do you have any sort of guiding principal when it comes to releasing music? does that carry over into any of your other projects? Tell me about the new record.

Whatever I want. Whenever I want. The new album "No drums no fire no flags" is on some tracks more ambient like, the rest are danceable little gems...

Do any of you gents have anything else going on? I don't want to leave anyone out.

Right now we are 100% focused on Paper. We do some other things, but not right now.

And lastly, assuming you conquer NYC, what's the next step? Is there an ultimate goal?

First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin. We wanna tour the West Coast in the US and then later on visit our fans throughout Europe.
