On Volcano attempt to tread the ground between postrock inspired rock of Silverbullit and the female-fronted shoegaze of A Sunny Day in Glasgow. Opener "Ride the wolf" is the best product of this strange interlocution, both driving and atmospheric. The chanting in "Out of sight" renders the composition slightly forced, deviating quite a ways from their strengths. "Goodbye fireflies" is crafted wonderfully, but it's poppier focus gives the track a radio-friendly sheen that spoils the pleasure a bit. There is hope to be found in the closer, as "The blank page" approaches sonic chaos in a way that I can only really compare to Sonic Youth, though there is a pop finesse present that Sonic Youth has not embraced. There's potential within On Volcano, it's just a shame that evidence for it is only found on half the tracks of their debut EP. Worth keeping an eye on these Finns, though.

MP3: On Volcano - Out of sight

Okay, time for one last mid-year highlight. On thinking about who to cover, I knew I had to do something non-Swedish since a lot of the higher rated stuff from thereabouts is rightfully getting the attention it deserves (and no, I'm not talking about Kleerup). So Finland it is! I was inclined to do another Frivolvol post¹, but I figure that would be too much negativity for one week. They are, after all, one of the most nihilistic/misanthropic bands I've heard in quite some time. Instead I give you another track from indierock shoegazers On Volcano. I know I only just got their debut EP "My sleep was filled with dreams" quite recently², but it's been on steady rotation ever since it arrived. Further proof of my devotion: I purchased a number of copies for resale knowing full well that they are an obscure act with no profile whatsoever. It's worth it to me, they are that good. As I said last time, the band started out doing postrock and you can still hear that in their sound, but they've honed and refined the approach to be more pop-oriented, much thanks to frontwoman Minna's prominent vocals. "Out of sight" is a perfect example as it starts off in dreampop land before getting direct and to-the-point on the chorus. Wait for the breakdown too- that's the best part! Totally unexpected, but absolutely perfect.

MP3: On Volcano - Ride the wolf

I've been getting my Finnish shoegaze confused! Murmansk, who I covered on Tuesday, have never been a postrock band. That would be On Volcano, today's featured artists. Gah, so many bios to read I can't keep 'em straight. Anyhow, both are great bands with an awful lot of similarities besides their country of origin as they both employ female vocalists, though I'd say that On Volcano is by far the poppier of the two. Whereas Murmansk piles on heavy layers of sound and tends to bury the vocals into the mix, On Volcano places them front and center. "Ride the wolf", the opening track of their debut EP "My sleep was filled with dreams", even has a bit of early U2 to it, with those martial drum beats and prominent bassline. You also get a bit of new-wave pop, not too far off from what the Swedish band Paris is known for. However, it's on the half-time breakdown on the 2nd half of the song that they really let loose, offering up a barrage of lush guitar textures. So yeah, similar but different but equally awesome.
