Swedish death metallers Maim have finished work on their sophomore album, recorded once again in their hometown of Åtvidaberg with producer/engineer Niels Nielsen. Expect a fall release. And speaking of Niels, check out a couple new solo singles from him at Bandcamp: http://nielsnielsen.bandcamp.com/
Niels Nielsen is streaming a dark new track at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/nielsfromhell
Apparently he also recently signed with a label here in the US, but no details are available yet.
This is cretin death metal for death metal cretins, as if that wasn't obvious from the title and cover art. No surprise, it's not as if the genre hasn't always been a refuge for degenerates and losers, though in Maim's favor, it must be said that their particular brand of death is far more schlocky b-movie horror/gore-obsessed than anything else. Thankfully, there's nothing even remotely approaching the distastefulness of Cannibal Corpse's "Fucked with a knife" and beyond that, I honestly doubt they take their lyrics all that seriously so neither should you. Anyhow, it's nice to see this album finally get a proper vinyl release at long last as that is the proper format for this sort of maggot-minded metal and Niels Nielsen's appropriately filthy, but extremely well-balanced production. Anything else you need to know can probably be gleaned from their country of origin (Sweden) and their choice of cover tune (Autopsy's "Ridden with disease"). I'll sure there are legions of people out there ready to start the backlash against the current old-school death metal revival trend, but as long as bands like this keep putting out solid new releases, I'm all for it. - Avi Roig
Niels Nielsen is offering up a new track for free download called "Shadow twin": http://nielsnielsen.net/
Look for his new album "Cmon vultures part: 2" to be released soon.
Martin Senter is a veteran of many bands - Seven Feet Four, EL-SD, Talking to Drake, maybe more -- but now he's decided to break out on his own and work on a solo EP. "Ingenting förlorat" is the first, fully realized sample of what he's done so far and it's pretty decent. Definitely in the vein of quirky guitar + electronics indie ala early Samuraj Cities (or maybe Niels Nielsen) with the added benefit of strong energy and a decent ear for clever vocal arrangements. The track does go on a little long however, but whatever, it's a demo. Gotta hear it back before you can work the quirks out. Hear some more stuff at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/martinsenter
Nice to hear someone emulating Samuraj Cities' haphazard bedroom-indie sound. The tools are rudimentary, but the ambitions are not -- Niels Nielsen makes lo-fi anthems, not 4-track scuzz. The lyrical sentiment of "We are youth" makes me feel old, but whatever, I guess I gotta get used to uppity kids who think they know it all. I was one of them once, too. Keep fighting the good fight and download the whole album this track comes from right here: http://nielsnielsen.bandcamp.com/
