Apparently he's signed to Polyvinyl for the release of his next album ("Dear John", due out January 27) and has ditched the comma in his name.

I had been looking forward to this show for a while, as having seen Loney‚ Dear twice in November‚ but now being much more familiar with his older material. Not one to disappoint, Emil Svanängen & Co. took the stage with a fury (for them) and played their most uptempo set I have seen. Concentrating mostly on material from the latest two releases "Sologne" and "Loney‚ noir", the set was heavy with hits such as "The city‚ the airport""I will call you lover again""Saturday waits" and "I am John". I have become a big fan of this band in the past year and, although New York crowds are somehwat boring and unreceptive‚ some others seemed to take a open ear and enjoy the Loney‚ Dear set too. Seeing as how they're touring the states for the bulk of the next two months - go see them‚ you don't want to miss this.

First gig of 2007 and a very impressive start to the new year. The SubPop connection combined with great songs should hopefully propel Loney, Dear to great stardom shortly. I'm glad I got the chance to see him in such an intimate venue, I'm sure he'll soon be playing the big corporate ones (or so I hope). Singer Emil Svanänge's got a magnificent voice and, even though I felt a bit weird (after Christmas and cosiness, drunk people and noise aren't exactly what I crave) and annoyed with all the people behind me talking, it managed to entrance me. This happens very rarely unfortunately, the last time I remember it happening was when I saw Jason Molina (aka Songs: Ohia) play the Luminaire in August last year. If 2007 will have more gigs like this in store, I'm starting to warm to the idea of rubbing shoulders with sweaty crowds in smelly and dirty venues all over again.

Loney, noir
Sub Pop/self-released

Already a bit, but soon to be probably even more, talked about Loney, Dear (or Emil Svanänge, which is his real name) move in the territories of atmospheric slow pop songs. Quite often it reminds me of the more mellow songs of The Flaming Lips. "Loney, Noir" is a great album that I know I will listen to for some months to come, it's very pleasant and it's one of the few albums I've listened to lately that makes me want to chill out in my bed and do nothing but listen to it from start to finish.

Loney Dear
Live @ 205 (11/03) and White Rabbit (11/04), NYC

Prior to Friday's show, I had only been familiar with the thrid Loney, Dear album "Sologne". With SubPop re-releasing the album stateside in February with a few additions, this was a chance for the band to showcase themselves and to get a buzz going. The band opened their CMJ stint with a sold-out showcase for the label, whom they were meeting for the first time. I did not have the chance to attend that show however, but caught the band over the next two days and did they put on a show! The Friday gig at 205 featured them playing a very uptempo set, especially compared to their recorded back-catalogue. The songs hit with a confident pop and swagger, whilst the band themselves were rather reserved, evening during rollicking versions of "The city, the airport" and "Warm, dark, comforting night". Saturday's show saw them in a more intimate performance, focusing on the softer side of things, including an absolutely gorgeous version of "I love you (In with the arms)". With "Loney, noir" seeing release this coming February, I'd expect Loney, Dear to be on everyone's radar for 2007, and if not — they should be.

MP3: Loney Dear - The city, the airport

Three months ago or so, back when it was first announced that SubPop had signed Swedish act Loney, Dear, I sent off a batch of questions to LD mainman Emil Svanängen. It took some time, but Emil finally got around to answering and here's what he had to say:

Tell me how the Sub Pop deal came about.
We played the SXSW in March 2006 and the rumours reached all the way to Seattle I guess.

I've been told a few of the details, but what should we expect from the new relationship?
They dont burn CDs and send them by the mailman when they get home from a tour. No, seriously, I think they seem to be great people and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll meet them for the first time when we play the Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday. [that's tonight btw]

What makes you think you're a good fit for the label?
I think they pick up good music, with a twist. That might come in handy for us.

What else are you up to right now? What is currently inspiring you?
I'm remixing and re-recording some old records to get them out on distributors when the time is right for that. Doing some writing and recording for the coming up album "Dear John". I'm always inspired by great bass melodies.

Tell me about the future. Where do you see yourself one year from now? Are you trying to progress in any certain direction?
I hope towards even more full-colour swingy music. I guess you'll see us on tour!

MP3: Loney Dear - The city, the airport

I admire bands like Loney, Dear. They didn't mess around with labels or music business bureaucracy, they just kept doing what they were doing and released their music themselves on CDR until other folks started to catch on. That's the true spirit of DIY. Of course it only really works out in the end if you're both persistent and good. Luckily, Loney, Dear is both. The new album "Sologne" which comes out next week is the band's first "official" CD release. And I use the term band loosely too, as Loney, Dear is essentially the solo project of one Emil Svanängen. I chose to post "The city, the airport" today because I love the way the song builds into the call-and-response chorus. It's so triumphant. I can also relate the words of the first verse about abandoning the city for quieter locales. I made the move recently and don't regret it a bit. Preorder the disc and save a dollar.
