The Domus
Fractures
Kasual Recordings

Perfectly produced, effortlessly executed, and deftly crafted, "Fractures" is almost an archetype indie-electro-pop record. Listening to tracks like "A3DM" and "Old new bridges" I want to give this record a 9/10, but a few of the tracks on the album verge on becoming overly sugary. This is not to suggest these sweet sections do not work; they do – I just am far more affected by the slower, thoughtful, almost mournful moments of The Domus' songwriting. Overall, "Fractures" is quite an album, even in its more playful moments. An interesting and eclectic mix of influences and interests, sometimes reflecting along similar tangents to lablemates Jettie, and other times almost approaching the mischievous tone of Juvelen, this isn't a record that should be overlooked. Kasual Recordings has always had an ear for great talents – The Domus are a great addition to their accomplished roster.

Useless trivia? Juvelen, aka Jonas Petersson, is revealed to be the same Jonas Petersson of 90s indie act Pineforest Crunch: http://www.musicbrigade.com/templates/UserPage____12413.aspx?uid=82&view=5&entryId=5287
Apparently he was also a member of Kamera too? I had no idea.

It's a hit! Four tracks of steamy r&b pop (plus an additional remix) really sets the standard for Juvelen. "Watch your step", "Summer spring" and "Of course I remember" are three slow-moving tracks meant to be played post-late night soirées, preferibly with a glass of wine and that special someone you've been making eyes with all night; and the Revl9n remix of "Watch your step" is a deconstructivists fantasy. However, the true centerpiece (and aptly-placed middle track) of this set is "Hanna", a dance-floor gem brimming will pulsing bass and drums. I've quickly become convinced that Juvelen could very well be on his way to pop stardom.

MP3: Juvelen - Watch your step

Frequent contributor Simon Tagestam did a guestpost on Juvelen back in October, but the track that got posted was demo quality and of pale resemblance to the now-finished product. It's time to hear it again with fresh ears.
I've always been kind of ambivalent about Prince. I fully acknowledge his tremendous skill, but outside of his well-known hits, I'm really not interested. Normally that would mean that this sort of tribute/emulation would be ignored, but I trust Hybris so I made sure to give Juvelen's debut EP an honest listen. Derivative or not, this is a hit. There's no other way to describe it. The all-falsetto delivery and the way he emphasizes words like "desperate" and "breathless" pull you in and don't let go. He starts each verse laid back and behind the beat as he tells his story, slowly picking it up as he works towards the chorus. My god, and then the anguish of the bridge! The vocal is pushed to the limit and cracks up - you know his pain because you can hear it. This is the way pop should be - catchy as hell, but emotional too. It doesn't have to be all that deep or original, it just has to work. Juvelen does it all.
