Kites for charity
Kasual Recordings/Eyeball Records
"Lush" appears to be my word of the month, but I can't find a better one for Jettie's newest effort. "Start/stop" is our introduction to "Kites for charity", and the composition exemplifies what Jettie are capable of at the top of their game: a driving, thickly melodic journey laden with warm synths, delay-heavy guitars, and a splendid voice settling perfectly into the mix. The energy of "Start/stop" is succinctly kept up by the following tracks, enamoring the listener even further with the act's capabilities and wondrous control of augmented pop melodies. Where previous album "Heading for mornings" had its beautiful, slower compositions, "Kites for charity" revels in its ability to keep a resilience in more up-tempo works, measuring itself only occasionally -- most notably in the gorgeously placid "Carraria Via", but the album quickly regains tempo with the following track, "The sky over Santa Rosa". Overall, "Kites for charity" is exactly what we've come to expect from Jettie -- layered, beautiful Scandinavian pop music with as much brains as it has heart.

Markovic
Adoreus
Wonderland Records
Opening with the ambitious "Lifeache", a track combining the Britpop sensibility of James with the soaring, cinematic approach of bands like Hope of the States and The Boxer Rebellion, Markovic effortlessly combine their melodic leanings with dark arrangements, laying out a thesis-of-sorts for the album to follow. "MakeBeliever" forces its way out of the layered ending of "EMO"; drumming reminiscent of Bloc Party's faster compositions accompanying the wiry, distorted opening, and building to the fuller sound that defines Markovic's "Adoreus". While there is much for anglophiles to rejoice in on the record, Markovic haven't in any way rejected their Scandinavian standing. "Crayons" has an "Isola"-era Kent feel to it, and numerous other songs seem indebted, if only slightly, to the influence of Jettie and Mew, especially the closing pair "Poem" and "Sweet surrender". Markovic's debut almost outlines the organic progression of the melancholy of the mid-90s into the pop music of today, yet "Adoreus" merely reminds us of previous and contemporary efforts, and is in no way hindered by these comparisons. There are echoes of the Britpop scene and 90s Swedish indie rock (and the 'older' feel of the production on "Adoreus" helps augment this nostalgic element), but echoes are all they are - Markovic are very much their own being. If this is what they are capable of on their first record, Markovic has a wonderful career ahead of them.

The Domus
Fractures
Kasual Recordings
Perfectly produced, effortlessly executed, and deftly crafted, "Fractures" is almost an archetype indie-electro-pop record. Listening to tracks like "A3DM" and "Old new bridges" I want to give this record a 9/10, but a few of the tracks on the album verge on becoming overly sugary. This is not to suggest these sweet sections do not work; they do – I just am far more affected by the slower, thoughtful, almost mournful moments of The Domus' songwriting. Overall, "Fractures" is quite an album, even in its more playful moments. An interesting and eclectic mix of influences and interests, sometimes reflecting along similar tangents to lablemates Jettie, and other times almost approaching the mischievous tone of Juvelen, this isn't a record that should be overlooked. Kasual Recordings has always had an ear for great talents – The Domus are a great addition to their accomplished roster.
