Turns out that the live reunion of Swedish skatepunks No Fun At All wasn't just a one-off occurrence - the band is actually back together again and putting out an album on their own new label Beat 'Em Down Records. Look for "Low rider" to be released on November 14 and keep an eye out for their cover of "Episode 666" by In Flames.
In Flames will be back in the US for a full tour this November: http://www.lambgoat.com/news/view.aspx?id=11292
It's been a long time since I've heard any melodic Swedish death metal that matches the quality of the stuff the Göteborg scene churned out in the mid-90s, long enough that I've pretty much given up hope. Which is fine really, there were enough quality releases back then that still stand the test of time. There's no need to revisit that sound, but that doesn't stop people from trying. Coldworker is most definitely not a melodic metal act, but just like they aren't a grind band either, that doesn't stop them from incorporating elements from various subgenres as they see fit. To go from harsh blastbeats into a riff that wouldn't be out of place on an In Flames album might seem a little incongruous, but they pull it off admirably. And I always love a good pinch-harmonic riff. They do stray a bit too far into riff-salad territory, especially around the solo section, however I have to say that it works overall in the grand scheme of things. It's always good to hear solid, new Swedish death metal that doesn't rely on the old rulebook.

In Flames' ninth studio album is a big YES if you are a 13 year old emo kid who think life sucks. With lyrics like "I feel like shit, but at least I feel something," it is evident enough they are aiming for the teen audience. On the contrary, it's a big NO if you like me, started to like this band around "The jester race" and have followed their demise. Sure, this album offers a few songs that will assure radio play and MTV exposure. "The mirrors truth", "March to the shore" and "Move through me", are all pretty good songs, but the formula is so well known from the last two efforts, you could swear you've heard this before. Sadly, half of the songs are b-side material at best. It's funny how this band moves more towards Korn and Linkin Park, but I guess they are going for the easy money. And sadly they will make some good cash with this half-assed album.
