I've recently been listening to this track a lot, in kind of a roundabout sort of way. The story: my wife and I go to the gym every morning (well, at least I do, her schedule is more, um, intermittent) and she requested my help with putting together some good workout tunes for her mp3 player. Of course I'm content with a healthy mix of brutal death metal and hardcore punk, but that just won't do -- she wants something melodic, so I oblige myself to pick out a few choice selections from my collection, most of which she is unfamiliar with. The criteria: match the BPM of High Hats' "The end", a track she knows and loves (as should everyone). So yeah, "The end" clocks at 155bpm, so I scan my files for appropriate tunes to match... Laakso and The Hives seem to fit the bill pretty well, but I know that few things are better than a pounding techno beat and "Habibi" is a solid 156 according to my calculator. Perfect! Now I just have to contend with her shrilly shouting "Don't!" at me every time I do something she doesn't like. Which is surprisingly often.

High Hats were forced to drop off their scheduled European tour with Baby Shakes due to their jobs not letting them take the required time off, but new labelmates Kendollls will take their place. Kendolls will be recording a new album this winter for release on Alleycat Records next spring.

My first though when I listened to The High Hats' new EP "The Montpellier sessions" was: Wow, this must be how Broder Daniel would sound without their depression. Even though they do sound like BD at times, there is no way to describe The High Hats sound without mentioning The Ramones, the teen/pop vocals in combination with a strong drum and bass just screams Ramones. And just like The Ramones, The High Hats' music is energetic and frantic and leaves no room for anything else. The EP just keeps on growing and it keeps the listener interested for as long as a 5 track EP possibly can. At times it's hard to sit still and not sing-along, hard to not to get influenced by the energy the music creates. The release grabs you straight from the start and when it ends, it leaves you craving for more and it's no wonder with its strong lyrics and punk-pop sound. Yes, The High Hats new EP is truly hard to forget.

So much free music out there, yet so little is worth hearing. As with yesterday's post on the High Hats, I'm here to help you cut through the muck as best I can. I suspect a lot of people overlooked my notice that Swedish hip-hop artist Fronda was offering up a full album for download and that's a shame because it's one of those rare exceptions where the music is actually worth hearing. Fuck all those endless Christmas singles/EPs/whatever; I'm sick of that shit before we even get to December. This is far more interesting, especially since it's been somewhat of a weak year for Swedish hip-hop. Obviously I'm not up on every release, but if Adam Tensta and Lazee are the best of the best, that's sad. Besides, the best Swedish hip-hop is almost always på Svenska. Now I can't say that this particular track ("Andas") breaks new ground or will blow minds, but it's 100% solid and that's all that matters. Hopefully it's enough to convince you to download the rest at the very least, or even make a donation. Good music deserves to be heard.
Fronda - Andas
I was charmed instantly by the High Hats when I first heard "Bitterswede", but their new free EP release "The Montpellier Sessions" seals the deal. They might not be from Göteborg proper, but they embody everything about that classic sound that I've come to love; a perfect balance of snotty punk and charming indiepop with an energy level that puts them on the edge of disaster. Even a false start can't destroy the greatness of "The end", in fact it might even make it better. And those gloriously out-of-tune vocals? It wouldn't be the same without 'em. The la-la-las seal the deal. There's a lot of people out there putting music up for free download, but it is incredibly rare that it's as good as this (unless you get it from me). Very recommended!
High Hats - The end
Swedish pop-punk act the High Hats have a brand new 5-song EP for free download on Friday: http://www.myspace.com/highhats
I assume the link will be posted on the page when they're ready. Lucky for me, I already have it and it's great.
I love love love self-depreciating/self-referential songs like this. Isolation Years' "Yellow cross on blue" edges it out ever so slightly in the end, but hey- there's no shame in being #2. My favorite couplet: "I feel good when I am pissed / I don't think that god exists" You can't go wrong when tossing in an acknowledgment of Sweden's status as a secular state as far as I'm concerned. I know it's goofy, but as a former religious studies student, I'm all about it. And the tacked on "P-I-G is the police" line that doesn't quite fit? It's so dumb, it's brilliant! If you don't like this, I don't like you.
