Figurines prep new EP

Danish indie act Figurines will be releasing the new 5-song EP "Lucky to love" next month as a precursor to their upcoming album, due out in the fall. The title track will serve as the forthcoming album's lead single and there will be one other track ("Poughkeepsie") that will appear on said album in a slightly different version. As for the rest of the songs, there's one unreleased track ("Drag the mood") from the "When the deer wore blue" sessions, a cover of fellow Danes The Mopeds ("Television time") and an REM cover ("New Orleans instrumental no. 1") which originally appeared on a Stereogum comp.

Figurines losing two members to school

Soundvenue reports that Figurines drummer Kristian Volden and bassist Mads Kjærgaard are leaving the band following their current tour obligations this month to go back to school, studying journalism and music management respectively: http://www.soundvenue.com/nyheder/2009/10/27/figurines-reduceret-til-en-trio (in Danish)
The band plans to continue on as a trio for the time being and plans to start work on writing songs for a new record soon.

Bahnhof - ReverseBahnhof
Reverse
Strange Ears

The press release tries to talk things up for this Danish band. The big drum is beaten on when Bahnhof is compared to internationally acknowledged Danish bands like The Raveonettes, Mew and Figurines and the comparison is correct when it comes to their nationalities. It's not correct musically. The band dresses well in the so typically Danish rock costume of today, where the influences are the 80's, Interpol and OMD. And that kind of gives me a feeling of saturation. Fed up with the lack of originality and fed up with the lack of songs. Ah yes, the songs. Sure, there are highlights in "The eyes of Ruby" and the single "Call the police" where the music is highly dominated by synthesizers which give the band a push forward and a reminiscence of Duran Duran! If they had the guts to head that direction, a lot more would have been won. Connecting with the beginning, a comparison with fellow countrymen in Kashmir is a tad more in its place. It's as equally transparent and boring. And anonymous.

Any record that starts off asking, "Would you trade a dysfunctional kidney for a broken heart?" has my immediate attention. As far as opening tracks go, Herr Nilsson put an inspiring foot forwards with "Camera for an eye", a tune whose competence and peculiar drive brings "Downhill thrill" completely alive and kick-starts its strange exploration. While comparable in many ways to Shout Out Louds and Figurines, and quite prone to the unusual bursts of energy that endear Laakso to their fans, Herr Nilsson are almost a distillation of everything that makes quirky Scandinavian pop so damned appealing. Title track "Downhill thrill" dances a little into Of Montreal's territory in its midsection before sealing the deal with thin guitar chords, building strings, and anthemic lyrics. It was "Huskies", though, that completely won me over, four tracks into a record I was already stirred by. "Downhill thrill" does meander into more bizarre terrain as it reaches its conclusion, quite markedly during the Beatles-esque, Consciousness Expansion-era duo "On the road again" and "Killerbee", but overall it is yet more proof that the Scandinavian music gods have smiled fondly upon 2007.

MP3: Leütenhaven - Still life (trompe l'oeil)

Leütenhaven are full of surprises. Their debut EP opens with a droning art piece reminiscent of The Giant's Dream which then gives way to sharp indiepop anchored by a tight rhythm section and mantra-like vocals. "Still life (trompe l'oeil)" seems straightforward as first, but as the name suggests, not all is what it seems. Three chords and an endless refrain? Not quite. The steady strum of the guitar is a red herring. Listen carefully and you'll hear new harmonies appear as the background shifts in subtle ways. Are those voices real or are they samples? Does it matter? Should we be concerned with each individual element or concentrate on the end result? What's the proper vantage? From my point of view, I find this song to be a sublime, but tricky work of pop art. Leütenhaven lies somewhere between the anxious, overreaching epic-ness of Arcade Fire and the steady workmanship of the Figurines, a melding of craft and inspiration. Unexpected, but welcome.
