These Finns play standard mid-tempo heaviness ala Isis, Koma, Cult of Luna and the like. They've got some good riffs here and there, but the songwriting is lacking too much in terms of dynamics and flow to elevate them above generic status. They have good ideas, they just don't quite know what to do with them. The screamy vocals kind of bug me too, but that's a minor peccadillo when so much of the album is instrumental. Not bad for a debut album, but kind of unnecessary in an increasingly overcrowded genre.

Today's top 10 is from Tim Bertilsson of the band Switchblade and the label Trust No One Recordings, both of which are excellent and worth investigating if you're into heavy music such as Isis or Cult of Luna. Check it.
Chalksounds has confirmed the signing of hyped indie band Convoj and will be releasing the group's debut five-song EP early next year. The band consists of members from Cult of Luna and Park Hotell and is said to sound like a "unique mix or impossible marriage of pop in the vein of Bear Quartet and Interpol."

Cult of Luna created with their first two full lengths a pretty interesting, if not always very original, take on the Neurosis/Isis-influenced metal/hardcore. They managed to keep some of the aggression up front while making the slow and lengthy progression alive and punishing. "Salvation" continues in that vein but a much more pronounced influenced by the post-rock heavyweights of the moment; like Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. CoL still manage to hit a home run with this record. No way in hell you don't like this.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this release. The only time I've heard of The Perishers was glancing through the liner notes for the Lost Patrol's "Song about running away". Doing some more research, I discovered that one of their songs is going onto the soundtrack of that trend-o-rama Fox show "The O.C." and a couple of the members was also involved in that Cult of Luna side-project Koma. Using my barely-functioning brain (thanks a lot, college), I didn't really know where they would fall in the spectrum.
"Let There Be Morning" is this Umeå, Sweden-based group's second effort. On the opener, "Weekends," lead singer and guitarist Ola Klüft's voice mournfully waits for the two-day break at the end of the work week. Klüft, being backed by Martin Gustafson (keyboards/backing vocals), Pehr Åström (bass) and Thomas Hedlund (drums), lets his voice handle every lyric as if it were a piece of porcelain. His vocals never weigh down the songs but provide the right amount of emotion for every song. The subtle guitar work, combined with the keyboards, creates a sound similar to that of Coldplay and Travis but with more of an "indie" edge to them. "Trouble sleeping," which will appear on vol. 2 of the soundtrack for "The O.C.", is the highlight of the album. Klüft's voice glides over the instruments while the guitar and piano quietly play off one another. Lyric-wise, the songs aren't that hard to decipher. Simple, straight-to-the-point stuff point that won't rack your brain.

Cult of Luna has a brand-new flash-based website online: http://www.cultofluna.com/
They also say that the promo edition of the new album "Salvation" that was leaked online is actually an unfinished, unmastered version of the real thing. In order to meet their release schedule they were left little choice but to put out what they had done in time as an advance copy. The real thing comes out on October 4 via Earache Records.
Check out four demo tracks from the new, still-unsigned band Convoj: http://www.convoj.tk/
The band is based out of Göteborg and Luleå and features members from Park Hotell, Cult of Luna and Music 77.
