The good people over at Parasol have got a sale on their top picks of 2002. Lots of great Swedish imports worth checking out, among many other fine releases. Can't go wrong with Citizen Bird/Silverbullit, that's for sure. And like they say, be on the lookout for the US release of "Inland Traveller" from Isolation Years coming up soon. A brilliant album.

Read a review of the new Cardigans single here (in Swedish). I heard the song on P3 yesterday and wasn't blown away, but it wasn't bad either. It actually reminded me quite a bit of A-Camp, Nina's recent solo project, with its heavy use of acoustic guitars. Anyhow, listen to the radio and hear it for yourself. I'm sure it'll be huge no matter what. Look for it in stores February 17.

Rumor has it that the upcoming TSOOL tour this spring will be major markets only, so all you people in your podunk towns are gonna lose out.

Aftonbladet has a short feature on Paris (in Swedish). The band will be opening for Melody Club in Stockholm on January 22.

Buddyhead totally disses the Swedish rock in their best/worst of 2002 list. Yeah, I'm annoyed that the mediocre bands are the ones getting huge too, but I'm not going to write a long diatribe about it. Look for their hissyfit at the very bottom of the page.

The Crown are currently rehearsing and writing new material for their next album, their first one with returned vocalist Johan Lindstrand. Here's what bassist Magnus Olsfelt had to say about it:

Alright, we are right now in the process of rehearsing new material for the next album. This time we are heading for the ultimate and so far it sounds very promising. The new material is pretty diverse but in general the songs have more POWER. Hard-hitting and straight forward, with more natural flow. So that the energy and force comes straight back to you.

Look for it next summer on Metal Blade Records or, in the meantime, catch the band on tour. Dates are here.

Here's a short little article with some info concerning the next record from The Soundtrack of Our Lives. Drummer Fredrik makes comments. (in Swedish)

Finland's Enternal Tears of Sorrow have broken up. The statement from the band:

With mixed feelings we have to announce that Eternal Tears of Sorrow have decided to split up. EToS have been on a break since March 2002. During the break, it has become obvious that it is time to quit.
This band started as a free-time activity about ten years ago. As we got more success, we also needed to give more and more of our time to the band. Day by day, we realised the band had become a full-time job for us. Now it's time to move on and do something different. This band achieved much more than we could imagine when we formed up this band.

However, we don't stop making and playing music. Check out the official EToS website regularly for information about the members and their other projects and bands. The site has been online for almost seven years now and will remain as it is. Only the address has changed: www.etos.tk.

We thank all our fans for support! A huge number of nice things happened to us between 1994 and today, thanks to you! On behalf of Eternal Tears of Sorrow in early January 2003, Jarmo Puolakanaho & Altti Veteläinen (the founding members)

Dave Lombardo (Slayer!) plays on four songs from the new upcoming Apocalyptica record "Reflections". If you didn't already know, Apocalyptica is the Finnish cello trio made famous for their covers of Metallica songs.

Some general housekeeping: I updated the About page. Not quite a FAQ, but just some issues I wanted to address.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives just keep racking up accolades from all over the place. Most recently, "Behind the Music" was named Entertainment Weekly's #2 album of the year:

As their name implies, these Swedish rockers are all about distilling the essence of their fave art-rock, psychedelic, folk, and punk bands into a bold, tuneful brew. You'll hear echoes of the Kinks, the Beatles, Love, and Pink Floyd here. But what's really exciting is that Soundtrack may be the first group in ages that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as its idols.

And that's not all! TSOOL also made Empyre Lounge's top 50 at #47:

A Swedish rock group taking the States by storm? No not those Swedes, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives is the second Swedish rock export that put out a killer disc this year. With more pop sense than their Swedish brethren The Hives, TSOOL have put together an impressive display of glam guitars and keyboards, with some psychedelic vibes mixed in.

And yes, The Hives get honored there too, coming in at #17:

Another one of the discs that doesn't really belong here since it is a couple years old but this it he first year the Hives have been in the mainstream. Frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist owes all his moves to Mick Jagger but the music is more like good ole Americans, the Stooges, and the MC5. Just under a half hour, Veni Vidi Vicious is the perfect shot in the ass that music needed this year.

The First Time Records put up a couple mp3s on their website. There isn't much else there as the new site isn't finished (how long has it been in the works guys?), but TFT is the label that put out Kevlar, Cobolt (ex-Refused) and a number of other groups in the States.

See the video for "Oh Night" from Christian Kjellvander right here: 56 / 100 / 300 (Windows Media)

Nicolai Dunger will be coming back to the US to play 2 shows at the Sundance Film Fest in Utah on January 17 & 18. After that, it's back to Europe. Dates are here.

Drummer Martin Svensson has left the Satanic Surfers. The band is currently taking a break after a long tour, but will resume work on new material shortly.

If you can, be sure to catch Hederos & Hellberg at one of the duo's final concerts. Their last EP just came out and it's getting great reviews.

"We just believe in what we do," singer/bassist Jonas Gustavsson said matter-of-factly. "If I wasn't 100 percent sure that I'm in one of the best bands in the world, I wouldn't be here."

Due to increased bandwidth concerns, I may have to limit the number of mp3 downloads on this site in the future. I'd rather not, but bandwidth is expensive and it's not as if I'm making any money here. Anyhow, I don't plan on taking them away completely so don't worry about that. If anyone is willing to remotely host files or has any other ideas, please let me know.

Remember those five songs Kristofer Åström recorded about a week ago? Well they are all gonna end up on that upcoming MCD after all. It's gonna be called "Dead End" and will be released in February (on Startracks, I assume). Here's what Kristofer had to say about it:

Personally, I think it's the best recording we've done so far. We recorded it live in studio and did some overdubs on a couple of songs. It's got an energy to it that I miss in the previous albums.

Hardcore Superstar is about to go back into the studio with producer Roberto Laghi to record the follow-up to "Thank You (For Letting Us Be Ourselves)". The planned release date is April 28.

Cobolt, featuring ex-Refused bassist Magnus Björklund, have a new album out on BCore Disc. It's called "Passoã". Fans of bands such as the Red House Painters might wanna check em out.

Håkan Hellström's new album "Det är så jag säger det" went straight to no. 1 on the Swedish music charts. Like no one saw that coming.

Hey, whaddya know? Marie Fredriksson is out of the hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor and will be back in the studio soon to work on the next Roxette album.

"A Swedish Blondie?" Aftonbladet reviews the latest album from The Sounds and provides some samples to listen to here.

Christian Kjellvander is the band of the week over at MTVE.com. There's an interview posted and you can also view his video for "Oh Night". The track is also available to your right, in convenient mp3 form.

Starmarket has started working on material for their next record. They've got about 5 songs so far with the goal of finishing 10 by Christmas. Their statement on the matter:

Worth to mention is also our new way of working, writing together, sometimes from scratch, sometimes from some ones idea. As a matter of fact it's a long time since it was so much fun to do new stuff.

Satyricon's upcoming European tour has been postponed to early next year. They promise the new tour will be a "MUCH better one for the benefit of our fans, record company and Satyricon" and will be posting dates as they are confirmed.

Cult of Luna have added Andreas Johansson on as their new bass player. They are still in the process of mixing their new album for Earache and rehearsing for a couple upcoming gigs around Scandinavia and the UK.

Christian Kjellvander will playing on the Swedish/Danish TV program Stereo (se/dk) in Malmö tomorrow. Wanna go? Send an email to petter.hedelin@svt.se and tell him you want tickets.

Christian's also out on the road, just like fellow Startracks artists Leiah and Kristofer Åström (separate tours, not together). Dates are here. (Europe only)

The video for the Madrugada song "Black Mambo" (from the last album, "The Nightly Disease") is now available on their website. It's never been featured on any TV program before, so go check it out. (low-res version here)

Katatonia has finished laying down the bass and drums for the 15 songs to be featured on their upcoming album. Guitars are up next.
