Dogsmile - Treating loneliness

Dogsmile (ex-Camouflage) have a new song up on myspace (and a new drummer): http://www.myspace.com/dogsmileswe/music/songs/treating-loneliness-82430601

New music from Dogsmile (ex-Camouflage)

Dogsmile, the band founded by three ex-members of Swedish postpunk act Camouflage (aka Tapirerna/The Tapirs), hasn't released anything since their 1995 album "Hey, I just wanna say hello", but now they're back and have a bunch of new tracks on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/dogsmileswe
Definitely does not sound like the old stuff, but still worth checking out I think. Also, speaking of Camouflage, the excellent Swedish postpunk blog Tonkraft recently came back to life with an old live set from the band's later period -- check it out: http://tonkraft-sr.blogspot.com/2010/08/camouflage-1988-live-i-umea.html

Camouflage turn 25

Swedish postpunks Camouflage have decided to mark the 25th anniversary of the release of their (quite excellent) self-titled debut by putting together a playlist of what they consider to be a best-of collection: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=152856334&blogId=534455400
Not sure if it's available on Spotify, but I bet that almost all of that stuff can be tracked down without too much trouble. Otherwise, it looks like the whole thing is streaming at myspace: http://www.myspace.com/camouflageswe

MP3: The Tapirs - My violet you

Not all of the records I picked up during my Stockholm shopping extravaganza were guaranteed hits. Indeed, quite a few were quite dubious, but I figured what the heck, when else am I gonna come across something like Viking Truckers? How can I pass that up? It's not possible. Don't worry, I'll get scans and mp3s for that one eventually, but the record I want to talk about this week is The Tapirs, which is Swedish postpunks Camouflage singing på Engelska. I figured there was a pretty good chance it was gonna suck as some of the band's later material isn't so hot, but whatever, if I'm gonna pick up the rest of their discography (with some of the old postcards still in the sleeve too! awesome!), I might as well add it to the stack. Luckily, the gamble paid off as the record is actually the same old songs as before, just overdubbed with new vocals. In other words, the songs that were so-so to begin with are still generally so-so, but the best material is just as awesome as ever. Case in point: "My violet you", the new version of "Violetta du" off the band's self-titled debut album. For Swedish-deficient dummies like myself it's great to hear the song in a language I can understand, but what it really comes down to is that it's just a damn good song. I was concerned that vocalist Ola Jörhall's pronunciation might not be up to snuff, but he does the job just fine. I guess the goal of international success never panned out though, or I suppose I would've heard of this record by now. Anyhow, like I said, it's good stuff so check it out.
Note for the audiophiles/collectors: this vinyl rip ran a little hot, so if you're interested in getting more of the album, give me a holler and I'll redo it.

The Tapirs - My violet you

MP3: Abcess Exil - Stormens öga

I got a lot of new music while traveling around Sweden, but the main thing I was on the prowl for was old Swedish postpunk vinyl. I only found one Cortex record (the "Animals" 7") as Nostalgipalatset in Stockholm (tack igen for the recommendation Joakim!), but I did manage to put together quite a stack of other albums from my list: Commando M. Pigg, Camouflage, Reeperbahn, Lolita Pop, Ståålfågel and so on, as well as the "För fulla segel" LP from Abcess Exil. They're not a band I know much about, but I know their tracks on the 4-way split with Cortex, Mystikens Vacuum and Bumsen Muss Mann are great, so I figured why not? It's not as if I'll ever stumble across it again here in the US. I'm glad I did too because it's pretty great classic dark Swedish postpunk/new-wave, though the record does veer a bit towards new romantic pop at times, sometimes even reminding me a bit of early INXS (not necessarily a bad thing). It's hard to pick a good song to represent the whole, but I like "Stormens öga", the first track on side two, because of that sinister synthbass pulse and the heavy percussion breakdown so that's the song you get today. However, should you be curious the hear more, I suggest you head over to Med Denna Verkliga Kniv because they just posted a quality rip of the full album a few days ago. Thanks for saving me some work!

MP3: Camouflage - Syster sol

The one style of music I've really come to appreciate over the last year or two is weirdo, big-haired, semi-obscure goth/post-punk. I like Interpol fine, but the multitude of Johnny-come-latelys are tiring, especially since the majority of them lack any edge whatsoever. It's the old stuff I'm really excited about; new to me, but not to the world. Bands like Kommunity FK, Crispy Ambulance and Nichts, to name a few. In that spirit, the new "Svensk postpunk klassiker" collection is a godsend - two discs full of bands that I've either never heard before or are only vaguely familiar with. I still need more time to fully digest it, but an early standout is Camouflage and their song "Syster sol". This is one of those bands I've heard of, but never really actually heard. After this, I'll definitely be tracking down more.

Camouflage - Syster sol

Bonnier Amigo will be putting out a 2-disc set of classic Swedish post-punk featuring acts such as Imperiet, Leather Nun, Camouflage and more. Sounds pretty awesome actually - I've been listening to a lot of this sort of thing recently (Leather Nun especially), so it's great to see it will be receiving more attention.
