Discobelle got themselves some corporate sponsorship from Scion to put together a comp of their favorite music, so of course they did the right thing and made sure that Sweden is well represented - artists featured include Maskinen, Boeoes Kaelstigen, Familjen and Dmitry Fyodorov. Koloni Records has put out a new 12" single from Swedish techno act Boeoes Kaelstigen called "Tippola" featuring the new tracks "Transpole" and "Mimosa". Read more and preview: http://boeoeskaelstigen.co.uk/?p=98
The more time I spend at my dayjob staring at long lines of code, the more I appreciate the soothing repetition of ambient techno. The consistent pulse is engaging enough to keep my mind working and focused and the lack of vocals keeps me from distraction. I'm no DJ, but when I queue up a long playlist and let the tracks fade into eachother, that's perfect for a long day's work. Besides the Boeoes Kaelstigen stuff I've talked about before, I also really appreciate Håkan Lidbo, especially his more straight-up housey stuff like this track. I like his weirder, more abstract stuff too (see "Musik för främmande civilisationer/Music for alien civilizations", for one), but that doesn't do me well for long, sustained periods of deep concentration. This is the stuff that's best suited to zoning out, whether it's in front of the computer or on the dancefloor. What makes it stand above other lesser techno, I can't really pinpoint as I lack the experience and the vocab to adequately convey it, but I know I like it and that's enough.
Håkan Lidbo - Sandviken by night

I'm a big fan of remixes. In some ways, remixing follows in the jazz tradition of improvising upon others' compositions: quoting their musical passages, reworking and rearranging them, sometimes in a way that deviates very little from the original, though, as is evidenced by Pluxus' reimagining of "Det snurrar i min skalle", other times in almost unrecognizable ways. Familjen's tracks lend themselves quite easily to remixes by other electronic artists, though, as I'd assumed, seeing how wide a range of musicians fall into the category "electronic", there are some remixes that are not quite up to the standard of the others. Kasper Bjørke's remix strays so little from the original framework of "Huvudet i sanden" that I am not entirely sure what the point was. The version featuring Adam T's supplementary hip-hop lyrics drags Familjen's track so far outside of the musical veins that made it appealing, to force in the additional lyrics that the remix feels lopsided and schizophrenic. Both reworkings of "Feber" have a very 90s, Moby-esque feel to them, so these songs will trend one way or the other depending on your own personal preferences. The iffy aspects out of the way, the remix album hold some gems: Mike Dow's phenomenal remix of "Det snurrar...", Perfume Unicorn's fantastic and festive reshaping of "Huvudet...", the aforementioned Pluxus contribution - a luxuriously paced, dark emendation, and Boeoes Kaelstigen's 'hey day of the Haçienda'-reshaping of "Det snurrar...". It's a mixed bag, but the last four tracks I mentioned are well worth the sticker price.

The latest Boeoes Kaelstigen 12" "Commuting colour" isn't quite as ridiculously hot as the first, "Pan European", but that doesn't mean it's a slacker. It still has plenty of bounce and as you'll hear on today's mp3, cribbing a melody line from labelmates Familjen doesn't hurt either. Anyhow, the point is to make you move. Anything else is secondary; this only does double-duty as head music because it's so good. Which is even more special because normally I could give a fuck about remixes, but I can't deny quality. The Dumb Dan remix of "Cecta" takes the track to new places, places worth going. Even as a techno ignoramus, I know I when to follow.
