Public radio does have its virtues: It gives weekly airtime to people such as Andreas Tilliander (former Swedish Grammy-Winner, present Kent-support gig, ever-productive multi-aliased electronic musician) to talk about and play electronic music in his acclaimed show "Ström" and, from time to time, it even lets said show hosts compile CDs. After a walk in the park with 2006's birdsong-remix CD "Pausfågeln remixad", the current topic, which translates to "New music for national grief", touches on more sombre grounds - its aim was to compile music that could be played on the radio in case of national grief, think tsunami or death in the royal family. Naturally, each of the record's 12 musician has their own personal concept of grief and expresses it through (more or less) crackling electronica in widely different ways. Ideally, such fragmentism could be enriching, as in the Pausfågel-compilation, but here it revives a familiar problem of compilations: some tracks truly stand out (to me: the more cut-up, less vocal ones) but others are more of the skipping-kind. It's a matter of taste, as always, but I think I'll stick with the Pausfågel-CD for now and wait for the next Ström-sampler.

The people behind Swedish Radio's electronic music program Ström (Andreas Tilliander, Håkan Lidbo and DJ Anna Gavanas), are releasing a new concept compilation on March 26 entitled "Musik för främmande civilisationer" (Music for foreign civilizations). Just like the excellent "Ny musik för landssorg" (New music for national grief) collection, the disc will feature an all-star cast of artists (Olof Dreijer of The Knife, Henrik Rylander, to name a few besides the curators) contributing music centered around a singular theme. I finally did my Kent homework last year, meaning I dug out all the old records and listened to them all over again - everything to be fully prepeared when "Tillbaka till samtiden" hit the shelves. With the album being somewhat of a dissapointment, however just a minor one, and with the prevoius experiences (all bad) I've had with Kent live, I had no real expectations when I arrived at Skövde Hockey Arena just in time to catch opening act Familjen (nope, not the right place for Jonas T. Karlsson and his buddy for the night, Andreas Tilliander). Kent playing in a Hockey Arena, taste that one. All signs pointed towards the same thing - this was going to be a horrifying night to remember. And oh how I was right! On everything except for the horrifying part. Tonight Jocke Berg and co. totally blows my mind, Hockey Arena or no Hockey Arena. I've never witnessed the band so intense and concentrated - it's just brilliant! All the hit songs are included, both old ones and new ones, even though one might argue that just about all Kent songs are hit songs, and the visual part of the show is breathtaking. The pick of the night must be the upbeat disco version of "Dom andra", with the extended version of "Mannen i den Vita Hatten (16 år senare)" coming in close behind. This was truly a pleasant surprise.

As the first song of the album goes: Nu händer det igen ("It is happening again"). A Scanian artist takes the special Scanian accent and makes it into an integral part of the music. Originally from Hässleholm, the same town that gave us Sophie Rimheden and Andreas Tilliander, one-man band Familjen gives us yet another electro hero. Filled with playfulness, without rose-eyed 80s nostalgia, Familjen feels very modern. He blends naive 80s melodies, 90s beats and 00s glitches into a cohesive whole. That combined with his squealing 303s and subtle guitars makes it all sound like it was recorded tomorrow. Album standout (and former IAT MP3 Of The Day) "Det snurrar i min skalle" should become one of the biggest hits of the summer, but the album is filled with songs almost as good. Finally, the lyrics must be mentioned. Familjen has a way with words, and has a knack for finding phrases that catch on. Music you can dance to, plus makes you think? Shocking!

B-sides will include remixes from Jori Hulkkonen (FIN), Andreas Tilliander (SWE) and Melnyk (UK). Speaking of Melnyk, he will be supporting Ebb at his UK debut on October 20 at Great Eastern Hotel in Liverpool along with Knivflickan and an appearance from Sara Berg. It's a guestlist-only show, but Jeff from Gaymonkey tells me he's got a few spots available if any IAT readers are interested. Email him at jeff@gaymonkeyrecords.com for details.

The good people at Pluxemburg report that Fibes, Oh Fibes! will have a new single in May with an album to follow in Septmeber. Label mainstay Pluxus is also working on new material for their fourth album and are currently in mixing mode. In other news, Japanese label Poplot recently released a Pluxus comp entitled "Plu Plux Plan" featuring a selection of 18 songs and two videos on a bonus DVD. Poplot has also licensed Andreas Tilliander's "World Industries" album and will be releasing it over there soon.
The concept of the NONS "Jävla kritiker!" compilation is intriguing: gather up a number of renown critics and have them all write reviews for songs yet to be made. Then have the artists create the song to fit the review. Even though I knew the results would be mixed, I still was incredibly excited to hear it because the idea is just too good. The downside however, is that my Swedish language skills are just not good enough to understand all of the critical essays that are the foundation of the project. Oh well, at least I still have the music, right? Well, the results are uneven, just as I predicted. There are a few diamonds in the rough though - both Andreas Tilliander and Sophie Rimheden contribute nice dancey electronic numbers and Nicolai Dunger's instrumental track is quite good, as is Silverbullit's song. The highlight for me though, is Isolation Years. It's not all that surprising since they have long been one of my favorite bands, but what can I say? The truth is what it is. Read the review and go download the song.
