Not exactly new, but news to me: Japanese label Alliance Trax has released an Abhinanda best-of collection entitled "Kizuna" featuring cuts from the band's entire catalogue as well as a new, previously unreleased track recorded in 2009. Yet another band from Umeå that delivers! Hell, if you didn't know better, you'd think that the songs featured on "Paranoia" were recorded in the mid-80's, following the likes of Minor Threat and Black Flag. To be honest, this is 25 minutes right up my alley! The Insurgent Kid-members are in no way strangers to the hardcore scene, coming from various successful bands in the past (Abhinanda, D.S. 13 to name a few) and it shows. The performance is flawless with singalongs, raging (and unbelievably tight) drums and guitar-riffs that carry every tune home. The fact that these guys recognize that a song doesn't have to be longer than, say, 2 minutes is admireable as well! This release proves Wasted Sounds to be one of the most interesting labels in Sweden at the moment. Can't wait for the premiere of "American hardcore" in Scandinavia? Get ahold of a copy of "Paranoia" and it'll be worth the wait!

Today's Friday oldie comes from Abhinanda off their final album "The rumble", originally released back in 1998 on Desperate Fight Records (No, I'm not writing in the straight-edge Xs). The band started off as kind of a generic moshcore band (as was the fashion in the mid-90s) before finally figuring out what they needed to do to be awesome, releasing one last record and then breaking up. Gee, haven't heard that story before, right? I actually don't really know that much about these dudes otherwise, but they were definitely a fixture of Umeå's legendary hardcore scene of the time. Not many bands of the era aged well, but Abhinanda's rocked-out sound holds up just fine. Tons of gang-vocal shouts, a fierce stop-and-go rhythm section and just enough melody and dissonance to keep things interesting. Best of all, it's fun. Now why aren't there more bands like this today?
