I have yet to see "Om gud vill" ("God willing"), the big-screen acting debut of The Cardigans' Nina Persson, but I have been fortunate enough to have heard the soundtrack. A lot of people seemed quite excited to hear her take on "Dead leaves and dirty ground" by the White Stripes, but if you ask me, the highlight is Nina singing the finnish tango classic "Itämaista rakkautta" ("Oriental love"). It's pretty amazing to hear how much Nina has progressed over the years - those first few Cardigans records are near and dear to my heart, but they are so far removed from what the band is capable of nowadays. Singing a White Stripes cover is slumming, plain and simple.

Let's continue with a bit more finnish music, shall we? The forecast calls for another blazing day of intense heat, so it's only fitting that I post a little beach music courtesy of The Others aka 22 PP, the instrumental surf-rock alias of 22 Pistepirkko. The band's first recorded output consists of three Link Wray covers (one of which I've posted today), packaged together with 22 PP's very first EP "Ouwee!" from 1986 and it's amazing how little the two recordings differ in terms of quality. Garage-rock, surf-rock, whatever - it all befits the same sort of grungy, homegrown sound. It's not the sort of thing I'd listen to year-round, but it sounds perfect when the weather calls for it. Now if only I could actually go to the beach today instead of being stuck in the office!

Es is a finnish project springing from the mind of Sami Sanpakkila; this is his fourth outing under the Es banner. Wow, is this guy a walking argument for the primal mysteries that must pervade the wilds of Finland. The music here is so mesmerizing, so evocative and formula-defying, it has the power to literally change your body chemistry. I'll dispense with mentioning song titles since they're just too long, but here are the highlights: Track 1 begins disarmingly with finnish vocals, providing a folksy little overture that lulls you into false expectations. #2 is an unhurried, stretched-out piece hovering between classical and ambient, with bits of keyboard and violin poking through the mix in a manner that seems random (but probably isn't). #3 is a piece of hypnotic psych-drone on which the introductory keyboards gradually dissolve into a transfixing piece that's very reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Shine on you crazy diamond," complete with lonesome sax. #4 showcases childlike piano, a little nylon-string guitar plucking and sounds of lapping water for a potently ambient effect. #6 is classic finnish psych-folk with wordless female vocals and vintage keyboards. And #7 is pretty much straight/no chaser ambient drone. Lordy, during the many times I played this disc while driving, I wasn't sure I could keep living my normal life. I just wanted to hit the road and find some societal dropouts to go hang with and contemplate woods and waterfalls. No quick summary can do this unique recording justice; let's just say that if you're into freaky, droning, boundary-smashing weirdness that remains thoroughly musical and focused, this disc is especially gripping and unforgettable.

finnish act Disco Ensemble is spreading their tentacles into Europe and has signed a worldwide deal (excluding Finland where they remain on Fullsteam) with Universal Records. They recently re-recorded four songs from the "First aid kit album with Pelle Gunnerfeldt (Fireside, The Hives, etc.) and Michael Ilbert (The Hellacopters, Cardigans, etc.) in Sweden for a special European rerelease in August. The single "Black euro" comes out first on August 4 and the full-length follows on August 18. And that's not all - the band will also release "We might fall apart" as a 7" single in the UK on July 3 simultaneously with a release in their home country of Finland. For the record, "We might..." is probably my favorite DE song that I've heard, but that's not necessarily saying that much.
