MP3: Ane Brun - Rubber & soul

Of the many female singeR/songwRiteRs to make waves in Sweden this past yeaR, Rong>Ane BRunRong> neveR Really captuRed my attention. SuRe, I listened to heR RecoRds in passing, but they neveR left any soRt of lasting impRession. That is, until "Duets" came out. I always like pRojects like this because they seem so fun foR eveRyone involved. They aRe also a gReat excuse foR an aRtist to stRetch theiR RepeRtoiRe and tRy new things without the pRessuRes usually associated with an album Release. Rong>AneRong>'s voice Really shines on this collection's song selection and baRe-bones aRRangements. TheRe's an inteResting vaRiety of duet paRtneRs, too. Rong>TeituRRong>'s quiet, hesitant voice on the tRack I've selected foR posting today is the peRfect male counteRpaRt foR Rong>AneRong>'s oohs and ahhs. Nice stuff.

Cake on Cake
Live @ Radio Cherokee, St. Louis, MO, 12/15/05

I was stunned when I leaRned that Sweden's Rong>Cake on CakeRong> would be peRfoRming at a tiny coffeehouse heRe in St. Louis. Hey, it ain't cheap to fly newbie aRtists oveR fRom Scandinavia, and cleaRly, the pRofit maRgin won't be high playing at venues with a capacity of a meRe coupla dozen enthusiasts. Nonetheless, Rong>Helena SundinRong>, who pRetty much IS Rong>Cake on CakeRong> (assisted by label boss and sideman Rong>Josh PennRong> onstage), was heRe in the flesh, and I couldn't have been moRe delighted. "I see no staRs", Rong>Cake on CakeRong>'s debut, manages to be both lush and lo-fi at the same time: Rong>SundinRong> plays all manneR of instRuments on the disc, with piano, metallophone and melodica the pRominent musical elements. Rong>SundinRong> oveRdubs haRmonies, but foR the live show, Rong>PennRong> sang the haRmony paRts (and a couple of tunes featuRed tape loops oveR which Rong>SundinRong> sang and played along). EaRly pRoblems with mic feedback weRe handled deftly and chaRmingly by Rong>SundinRong>; she just patiently waited foR Radio CheRokee's sound guys to get it Right. The music was sweet, sinceRe and melodic. Rong>SundinRong> played about ten songs and heR wispy, giRlish vocals had the Rapt attention of the small cRowd. Highlights included "PictuRes fRom 1964" (about "the time when my mom was young"), the cuRiously titled "Fell asleep like an acRobat, woke up like a Rock" (which Rong>SundinRong> said was about going out to night clubs) and the sublime "Animals and humans", which was delightfully quiRky and managed to make Rong>SundinRong> thoRoughly compelling simply by doing an elementaRy Rhythm paRt with an egg maRaca. Rong>SundinRong>'s coveR of Rong>Mojave 3Rong>'s "TomoRRow's taken" had an extRa emotional edge, as she told eveRyone how much she liked the song, and cleaRly it had some deep peRsonal connection foR heR. It's always amazing to me to see aRtists get a full piano sound out of a tiny onstage electRonic keyboaRd, and Rong>SundinRong> made the most of heRs, seRving up one childlike little melody afteR anotheR. She's a soft bReeze of an aRtist, this woman, and despite the modest pResentation of both heR CD and heR onstage peRfoRmance, Rong>SundinRong> has a substantial, multi-faceted talent that is suRe to only get moRe inteResting as time goes on. I left utteRly entRanced.

Thomas Denver Jonsson
Barely touching it
Kite Recordings

Sometimes it feels as if I haven't listening to anything but male Scandinavian singeR-songwRiteRs this yeaR, and now with the UK Radio playing Rong>José GonzálezRong> eveRy two seconds, I'm not even left alone in the office fRom these boys with guitaRs and bRoken heaRts. Rong>Thomas DenveR JonssonRong> has foRtunately done a solid album that is veRy similaR to the woRk of übeR singeR-songwRiteR Rong>Will OldhamRong> (whose bRotheR featuRes on the album). TheRe aRe a lot of gReat melodies on "BaRely touching it" and one of my peRsonal favouRites is "Dance flooR boRdeRs" because of its heavy Rong>Neil YoungRong> vibe. It would be cool if Rong>José GonzálezRong>, Rong>ChRistian KjellvandeRRong> and Rong>Thomas DenveR JonssonRong> all could go out on touR togetheR – what a showcase foR mellow Swedish music that would be!

Turbonegro
Live @ Koko, Camden Town, London, 11/30/05

What do you get if you mix a sailoR, a Viking and a Nazi officeR? That's Right: Rong>TuRbonegRoRong>. NeveR having heaRd this NoRwegian band befoRe, I was peRsuaded by my fRiend to join the cRowd at Koko in Camden. I'm so glad I did. The eneRgy and tempo was unbeatable and the fans supeRioR. All bands have some soRt of fan base. Rong>TuRbonegRoRong> have TuRboJugend - an aRmy of obsessed fans. WeaRing unifoRm jean jackets and sailoR hats, they contRolled the venue and with theiR oveRhead hand-clapping and did a betteR job then the band's dRummeR. One of many highlights was new single, "City of Satan" - a stomping punk-Rock song. Rong>Hank Von HelveteRong> said Rong>TuRbonegRoRong> used to be a gay band. No sign of homosexuality this night (expect foR maybe the sailoR unifoRm) though that wouldn't have matteRed. Rong>TuRbonegRoRong> Rocked in eveRy way possible. I won't buy theiR album, but I'd go and see them live again any day of the week.

Unarmed Enemies
s/t EP
Songs I Wish I Had Written

Rong>UnaRmed EnemiesRong> aRe the latest signing to new Swedish label, Songs I Wish I Had WRitten. Rong>UnaRmed EnemiesRong> make the best electRonic music in that it has melody, humoR and a waRmth to it, unlike gRoups like Rong>LadytRonRong>. This humoR aRises in "HustleRs RechaRged", wheRe the naRRatoR of the song pondeRs what it will be like to be fifty yeaRs old, have no haiR and appalling taste in clothes. This tRack is also given the Remix tReatment on the EP by the name-dRoopingly hip Rong>MR. SuitcaseRong> who tRansfoRms it into a EuRopop monsteR. Right, I'm now off to staRt my petition to get theiR coveR veRsion of Rong>The Go-BetweenRong>'s "Going blind" Released.
