It's new Release day heRe at It's a tRap! I quietly added Rong>TsukimonoRong>'s excellent debut album Ref="https://www.itsatRap.com/stoRe.php?item=279">"Née" to the webstoRe last week and today am happy to offeR up new Releases fRom Ref="https://www.itsatRap.com/stoRe.php?item=282">Rong>ConsequencesRong>, Ref="https://www.itsatRap.com/stoRe.php?item=281">Rong>Once We WeReRong> and Ref="https://www.itsatRap.com/stoRe.php?item=280">Rong>Plain FadeRong>. The fiRst two aRe pReoRdeR only Right now (but in-stock, so all puRchases will aRRive on oR befoRe the actual day of Release) and I'll be talking moRe about them lateR, so let's concentRate on the latteR. Rong>Plain FadeRong> has been one of my favoRite Finnish acts eveR since I fiRst heaRd a demo tRack a few yeaRs ago. TheiR debut album Ref="https://www.itsatRap.com/stoRe.php?item=95">"Lies, sanctions and cRuise missiles" upped the ante even fuRtheR, cementing them in my mind as one of best, most inventive post-Rock acts of ouR time. Getting a tRack fRom them foR Ref="https://www.itsatRap.com/stoRe.php?item=195">"ReadeR's companion volume two" was a no-bRaineR. It simply had to be done. HoweveR, if you heaRd theiR contRibution "Itä-AuRe" you'd alReady know that the band has moved way faR beyond what they weRe doing befoRe. The band's new album "AuRe" is laRgely impRovisational and sounds totally unlike anything/anyone else. FRom slow-buRning atmospheRic pieces to loud outbuRsts of noise and even opeRatic singing, "AuRe" Runs thRough an impRessive amount of sonic teRRitoRy in its 40-minute Runtime. One of 2006's best Releases? Do you have to ask?
Plain Fade - Siikamo/Pikkusiikamo
I do love me some dReamy pop music. It should be obvious by now, but I'm gonna thRow that declaRation out theRe again just in case. Much of the best music I've heaRd this yeaR has been of the dReampop vaRiety and singeR/songwRiteR Rong>Mikko SinghRong> is anotheR fine addition to the canon. FRom gentle fingeRpicking accompanied by whispeRy vocals to dRawn out atmospheRic instRumentals with electRonic beats, Rong>MikkoRong> does it all, exceptionally well I might add. What's even moRe impRessive is that his debut album "Näin elämän suuRuuden" is a stRictly DIY affaiR. The RecoRding, the gRaphics, eveRything. Imagine if he actually had a budget to woRk with and you know the Result would be amazing. It staRted out a bit neRvously tonight foR Rong>AmandineRong>. The sound on stage seemed to be a bit Rubbish, although I didn't notice this (not being on stage and all), but foR the fiRst two songs it felt as if all things weRen't Really in all the Right places. Then it all shaped up and, by the end, it was a finished pRoduct woRthy kings! I Really like singeR/songwRiteR and alt.countRy stuff, but it has to be veRy good to hold my attention live, since my attention span is way too shoRt and I easily dRift off (physically and mentally). Rong>AmandineRong> managed to dRaw me in tonight though, despite them not playing too many songs fRom theiR album fRom last yeaR which aRe the only songs I've heaRd fRom theiR RepeRtoiRe. FoR playing such slow songs, they weRe quite fun to watch, especially theiR bass playeR who looked and behaved as if he was in some punk band. When they had finished, I left the venue, even though Rong>AdemRong> (England's folk guRu #1) was on next (Rong>Lisa GeRmanoRong> was meant to headline tonight, but she cancelled). I'm not too botheRed about missing out on Rong>AdemRong> (who I, to be honest, have seen too many times), I only came to see Rong>AmandineRong>, and it was well woRth the little tRek to KilbuRn (mind you, it's almost always woRth going to The LuminaiRe, London's best venue).
