Interview: Peter Ahlqvist (Burning Heart Records)

It's been awhile since we heard anything about 'em, but international supergroup Vanessa and the Os will finally be releasing their debut album "La ballade d'O" on May 25. As mentioned before, the band features James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Niclas Frisk (Atomic Swing), Andreas Mattson (Popsicle) and French frontwoman Vanessa Quiñones. The ever-so dependable Pelle Gunnerfeldt recorded them.

Millencolin
Kingwood
Burning Heart Records

I've been a fan of Millencolin since I was 14 and heard their first EP "Use your nose" (they were really my first love, well them and Jakob Hellman). I think their two first albums are classics, whereas the third one ("Music for monkeys") and their fourth one ("Home from Home") have never rotated that much in my stereo. With their fourth album ("Pennybridge pioneers") they got Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion) to produce and the result was a heavier sound (heavier as in still soft but more edgier than their previous super poppy sound), which suited them well and it sort of made it appear as if they had matured a bit and musically "evolved". I was very relieved to hear then that with "Kingwood" (their sixth album) they have once again gone "heavier" and decided to write some less wimpy songs than before. It's still melodic new school punk we're dealing with though, melodic new school punk of the finest variety! Most people don't like this sort of stuff, or at least None of my friends do (there is of course no reason for this), but if you like your Blink 182, Green Day, Descendents, Lagwagon, NOFX and so on, you should definitely give this a listen.

Looks like there's still a multitude of problems for Gorgoroth. While we haven't heard much about the blasphemy allegations recently, it seems that negotiations with Season of Mist have fallen apart with the label issuing the following statement:

Despite negotiating for several months and despite all the rumors, Season of Mist and Gorgoroth could not find a final agreement on their cooperation, both on a contractual and personal level. We Nonetheless sincerely wish the band the best. Season of Mist is still handling the only official reissues remastered of [the band's early albums] "Pentagram" (1994), "Antichrist" (1996) and "Under the Sign of Hell" (1997), out now in limited digipack with guitar pick.

The band was last signed with Nuclear Blast and is currently at Lydriket Studios in Norway recording a new album entitled "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam", tentatively due out late summer/early spring. Since we all know that controversy is an easy way to sell records, I'm sure somebody will be picking it up for release eventually.

The latest from renown Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound:

"Where We`re At" is a collection of present and future supersounds from Smalltown. The album contains 9 tracks from the lastest releases and from upcoming releases, and is meant as an introduction to the Smalltown Supersound label. This is also to show "where we`re at" after having split Smalltown Supersound in two; Smalltown Superjazzz and Smalltown Supersound. The Smalltown Supersound label will be presenting leftfield pop music (or our definition of pop) and the Smalltown Superjazzz presenting the jazz, (or our definition of jazz). In short time we will also put together a Smalltown Superjazzz compilation.

"Where We`re At" comes in slimline cover, and will be sold at budget price. None of the tracks are exclusive. The compilation also introduces 2 new acts; Toy from Bergen who has released one 7” on Telle Records (Royksopp, Kings Of Conveniece) and Mental Overdrive which released the first albums on the seminal R&S Records in Belgium (the label that among others discovered Aphex Twin) and was later signed to Virgin, before managing to get out of that contract to get signed to Smalltown Supersound. The other acts on the compilation are Jaga Jazzist, Kim Hiorthøy, Lars Horntveth, Sir Dupermann, Yuichiro Fujimoto, Sonic Youth/Mats Gustafsson and Martin Horntveth.

Release date is set to 4th of September.

Nonexist has confirmed the departure of vocalist Johan Liiva (Hearse, ex-Arch Enemy) leaving only guitarist Johan Reinholdz as the sole member of the band. Liiva decided he wished to concentrate his time on his other band Hearse and there are no hard feelings between the guys. Drummer Matte Modin (Dark Funeral, Defleshed) left recently citing that he too would need more time to concentrate on his other projects. But has that slowed the band? Of course not! Reinholdz is still writing material that he says is "slower, heavier and a bit more melodic" than the group's previous work, but is, of course, "still brutal." He will begin working on the new album at his home studio shortly and is currently seeking a replacement vocalist. Interested parties should contact johanreinholdz@hotmail.com.
