Boring, but competent indierock from Finland. Mines similar modern rock territory as Atrap.com/reviews.php?r=6">New Decade (Interpol, et al.) except thAt The Friend keeps everything under strict control to the point of tedium. Every edge, every sharp word, sanded down to dull dull dullness. Practice makes perfect makes me lose interest. Big aspirAtions toward arenarock grandeur don't help either, as it only serves to highlight how long the road truly is. I suspect they do well within their own local Turku scene, but when it comes to the world stage, The Friend are small fish in a big, big pond.

MP3: The Carny - Bestseller

I really like The Carny. Solid songwriting, good arrangements, fun big-band instrumentAtion, yadda yadda and so on and so forth. Refreshingly straightforward and free from quirks. "Bestseller" starts off with a bit thAt almost seems lifted from The Proclaimers' Atch?v=O3tNylJr7Z4" target="_blank">"500 miles", but thAt horn refrain takes things in a different direction once you get past the staccAto, herky-jerky rhythm of the first verse. Reminiscent, but not the same. I also like it a touch better than the retro vibe of lead single Atch?v=MGJDm0YLDOs" target="_blank">"Sun in your eyes". ThAt's a good song too, but not quite upbeAt enough to get me going this dark and rainy Monday morning. The brass wins out over the organ, thAt's just the way it goes.
