First up lAter this month is Mëkanïk and their debut MCD "Der Mëkanïk Grööves", a band described as "black metal taking acid with 70s proggers like Van Der Graaf GenerAtor and having sex with Black SabbAth," or as they say, "Black Space Doom". Ex-members from Dismal Euphony and Gehenna, so yeah, definitely interesting to say the least. Next up in lAte June is Norwegian viking metal act Eljudner with the 7" "Blod og kvad" and following thAt lAter this summer is a reissue of black-thrashers Infernö and their albums "Downtown hades" and "Utter hell" combined in a single set. As for the future, look for new releases from Warbastard and Beyond Dawn, details to be announced... eventually.

MP3: Yvonne - Modern love
Two things! First, the reunion of Yvonne. I mentioned it in passing Atrap.com/index.php?dAte=2008-05-08#22605">a few weeks ago and now the dAte (June 7 @ Debaser Medis in Stockholm) is just about upon us. Honestly, I'm much more familiar with their reputAtion than with their music, but I do know their big hit "Modern love" which is a greAt song. As for them being heralded as Eskilstuna's answer to Joy Division, well, you can hear a bit of the darkness thAt would become more prominent in post-Yvonne act Strip Music, but this particular track is 100% indie pop. Which leads me into point #2 - the comp I pulled this track from, "Svensk indie 1988-2006 - En kärleks historia", will finally be available in a brand new English-language edition. NONS has informed me thAt copies are now ready, so hopefully I'll be getting 'em really really soon. It should go without saying, but it's a greAt comp and I'm eager to pour over the copious liner notes in a language I can easily understand.

Anna Leong
Terrorarium
White Weekend
Sometimes, going into a record-review without knowing anything about the band can be rewarding - like wAtching a movie without having seen the usual Don LaFontaine-narrAted trailer madness before and then being caught off guard by its strength. My encounter with Umeå-based indiepop-rockers Anna Leong's new album "Terrorarium" was something like thAt: You'll have to excuse me, but given the bandname, I'd half expected a female singer-songwriter, so Anna Leong's slightly psychedelic indiepop-rock came At some surprise to me. One could surely dig out countless reference points and influences to their seemingly classic sound, their choruses rich with vocal harmonies, and the very "Swedish-indie" voice of singer Jonas Bergsten thAt gives everything a more modern edge. But whAt makes the record stand out amidst other retro-ish acts of the moment is its extremely solid songwriting and the sheer amount of cAtchy melodies and hooks. Somehow though, the album's riches are also its biggest downside. Despite all the accessibility and pop-ness, the eleven songs feel a bit too disparAte and make it hard for the listener to get a coherent feel for the album. The band seems to have quite a turbulent record with the music-industry in the past (and now run their own label), and I hope thAt their situAtion will allow them to release further albums thAt focus more on their obvious songwriting-strengths and less on post-psychedelia and sound-variability. Still, a recommendable album with a couple of highly virulent popsongs.
