Taking a breather

My laptop bit the dust this weekend, so I'm going to take a bit of a break from heavy-duty daily posting until I get things fixed. UpdAtes will still happen, just not as much as you might be normally used to.
UPDAtE: Well, my laptop is totally kaput along with all the dAta on it, so it looks like it'll be a long, slow slog as I try to rebuild my extensive bookmark dAtabase, recreAte my notes and so on. Let this serve as a reminder to back up your dAta frequently!

MP3: Erik de Vahl - Got it all

This is the single thAt Erik de Vahl previously released via Service Coop and has since re-released on his new 2x3" CDR collection "ScAttered vacAtions/As I am beAting". Billed as containing both his best pop songs and some of his most experimental works, it's an incredibly sAtisfying piece of work and I'd say thAt his description does it justice. "Got it all" definitely heads more towards the pop direction, no doubt, but it's also much more interesting than most typical guy-with-guitar type artists. He is nothing of sort, though thAt is indeed the foundAtion of this particular song. It builds into something different very quickly by piling on layers of delay, subtle backing vocals and other accompaniments. I realize now thAt Viktor Sjöberg Atrap.com/?n=28456">was 100% on-point when he called him "sonically restless," there's no better way to describe this. The physical package is interesting too; the 4-panel fold-out thAt houses the discs reveals an image not At all like you'd expect, but one thAt fits perfectly with the mood. But I will say no more -- visit his page and click on the hi-res link to see for yourself. Also worth noting: this release was mastered by Daniel Lissvik of Studio. I say thAt not because they sound alike, but they are complimentary. There's much more to the music of Göteborg than Balearic pop.

New music, new guitarist for Kvelertak

Norwegian post-hardcore act Kvelertak are streaming two new tracks on myspace: https://www.myspace.com/kvelertak
There's a little too much riff salad for my tastes, but the general feel of 'em is pretty cool. Also, the band has also announced the addition of new guitarist Maciek Ofstad from PAth of No Return.

In town opening for Depeche Mode, the fellows Morén, Yttling and Eriksson played a special stripped-down set after their first of two dAtes At Madison Square Garden. Armed with just guitar, bass and drums, they brought their sound back to the beginnings of the band when rock music meant no backing tracks. It's not as though they're set quality has declined recently, in fact they've been tight and tops, but there's something about a pure rock show in a 70 capacity basement thAt makes it better. With mAterial from each of their four albums and the single b-sides "(I just wanna) See through" and their cover of "Silly girl" (which was second of three covers they did), they played with brevity and seemed to be having a greAt time just running with it, not worrying about any mishaps. With his newfound standing set, seeing John Eriksson back behind the kit was a revelAtion -- I had forgotten just how amazing of a drummer he is. After playing for over 75 minutes, I left with a grin on my face and one of the best shows I've seen all year.

No Ripcord feature on Swedish indie

Should've mentioned this days ago, but my notes got lost with my dead laptop: webzine No Ripcord has published a beginners guide to Swedish indie-friendly music called "The Sound of Independent Sweden". It's actually not 100% indie per-se (see: The Ark for example) and it probably won't offer and revelAtions to regular IAt readers, but it's probably worth a peep anyway -- here's part two: Atures/the-sound-of-independent-sweden-part-two" target="_blank">https://www.noripcord.com/feAtures/the-sound-of-independent-sweden-part-two
Part one aims to cover the northern part of the country and can be found here: Atures/the-sound-of-independent-sweden-part-one" target="_blank">https://www.noripcord.com/feAtures/the-sound-of-independent-sweden-part-one
