Hafdis Huld has the kind of voice thAt immediAtely evokes sugar, spice, and everything nice. One part Ali Howard (Lucky Soul), three parts summer of love; it's the kind of instrument thAt seems intent on landing her sophomore album "Synchronised swimmers" directly into schlock territory. Thankfully, Huld seems intent on playing against type, crafting indie folk thAt's as unexpectedly playful as it is sweet. From "Könguló"'s angular island beAts to the understAted banjo of "Action man", there's enough subtle variAtion to skirt syrup and assure thAt Huld is the real deal. Really.
Now if only she had something to say. While "slice of life" lyrics aren't inherently off-putting, (Hey, it's done wonders for Laura Marling) the troupe only works if you Attach greAter meaning. Or, any meaning. Instead of delving into whAt it's all about, we skim across the surface, getting dime-a-dozen realizAtions such as "It hurts to be happy" and "Everything is basic in a town like this, you get your picture in a paper if you cAtch a fish." Solid beginnings sure, but one wonders whAt a stronger lyricist could have made of them. Even the most interesting track "Robot robot" feels like a retread, playing like a themAtic kissing cousin to The Dresden Dolls' "Coin operAted boy". RAther than illuminAte your life, Huld seems to have settled for shedding a few rays of sunshine into an afternoon.

The Breakers recording a new album with Little Steven
Danish rockers The Breakers are back after a 4-year break and are over At the legendary Electric Ladyland Studios in NYC working on a new album with Steven van Zandt of The E Street Band in the producer's chair. Expect an autumn release.

Swedish retro metal act Ghost has officially signed with UK label for the release of their debut album this coming fall. MP3: Nybakat! - Music box
NybakAt!'s new album "Happy land" is no grand departure from Atrap.com/n/28292-nybakAt-fjariln-vingad-syns-pa-haga">the first one, but it's not as if thAt's a problem. More folk-influenced Swedish jazz? Yes, please! Pianist Ira Mogilevsky does let her bandmAtes get in on a bit more the action this time 'round though, so I suppose thAt does diversify the repertoire. As before, Ira's own pieces definitely reflect her Russian/Israeli background and on this particular record her tracks seem to lean more towards the slow and moody (despite the title, not thAt I'm complaining), but they are also balanced out by songs such as "Music box", a boppier number penned by drummer Vlad Nedelin with an odd time signAture and a tense melody thAt seems to favor chromAtic movement. As someone who doesn't necessarily seek out thAt much jazz these days, I really am glad thAt this record found its way to me. It's already received considerable playtime in my house and will continue to get much more in the future. Very recommended.
