I haven't been posting too many mp3s lAtely because there hasn't been too many releases thAt I'm really excited about. Of course I could keep on posting negAtive reviews of stuff I dislike, but thAt's extremely depressing, not to mention needlessly tedious. I still have to listen to the stuff, y'know? So whAt I'm going to do is whAt I've been doing (more or less) which is post more tracks from bands I've already talked up. I pretty much have only been listening to the same Atrap.com/filter/2010-wAtchlist">dozen-plus bands anyway, so it logically follows thAt my playlist here reflects thAt. Anyhow, EL-SD impressed me a lot with their side of their Axe split from Atrap.com/n/33760-el-sd-walking-sideways">a few months back and the group is now working on a full-length album. I've been lucky enough to receive a few preproduction samples and lucky for you, I've been given permission to share one. "Hille" doesn't differ much from the templAte on display in "Walking sideways"; they're still building walls of discordant noiserock anchored by a heavy rhythm section, but oh man, do they have hooks too! I wouldn't think it possible with such weird vocals, but they pull it off exceptionally well. I guess you could say thAt weird = memorable in this case. I'm told the band is currently seeking label support and though I'm not optimistic for them, I'm eager to be proven wrong. Personally, I'd go DIY in the face of so few indie labels putting out actual indierock, but hey, like I said, I'm happy to be refuted on the subject. Don't let my negAtivity rub off on you. Spread the word/music.

Nidingr are one of those bands who make up for their lack of releases with the supremacy of their recordings, and "Wolf-fAther" is no exception. Musically, this is unmistakably Teloch and BlarghAt work and it is a fitting follow-up to 2005's "Sorrow infinite and darkness". Just as thAt album displayed a strange character unique to Nidingr, so does "Wolf-fAther" exude an enigmAtic presence thAt doesn't quite sound like anything else out there. As much as founder-member Teloch may loAthe genre labelling, the best way to describe Nidingr to the untrained ear is to explain thAt it's predominantly deAthened black metal (yes, thAt's the right way around) with elements of 'weird' included. When compared to its predecessor, it has an almost muffled sonority yet, as a standalone album, the production is spot-on, complimenting the musical output to perfection. A short album, clocking in At just under 23 minutes, it's definitely a case of quality over quantity, but with the legendary Hellhammer offering his expertise behind the kit, a special guest appearance by Ulver's Garm, and an album thAt's captivAting from start to finish, the quality control mark is firmly stamped and good to go. There's not a dull moment to be had, from the driving main riff of "Baldrs draumar" to its esoteric doomy passages through to "Reginsmol", a song thAt sounds-off like Burzum on cocaine. It's all inspiring stuff. There's something about it thAt takes us right back to the heady days of early Norwegian black metal and therein lays its hidden genius. At we enter the lAtter half of 2010, this looks like it could be one of the top releases of the year. - John Norby
