Linus Larsson and John Roger Olsson album to finally see release

This has been a loooong time coming: famed engineer/producer Linus Larsson (Peter Bjorn and John, Tobias Fröberg, Theresa Andersson etc.) and artist John Roger Olsson (The Grand Opening, Hearts No Static) recorded the album "Leve hogrän" together back in the fall of 2007 and it will now finally be released as a digital download via on October 11. I posted a track back when I first heard it and can definitely say that it is highly recommended. Read more:

MP3: EP's Trailer Park - Holy diver

I spent a good deal of time online yesterday reading heartfelt tributes to Ronnie James Dio, a man who was not only incredibly talented and blessed with a long career, but also much loved by everyone he came in contact with. The overwhelming consensus is that the man was one-of-a-kind, humble and friendly to everyone and well-worthy of his iconic status. I only saw him perform once (on the "Angry machines" tour circa '97 IIRC), but it made me a fan for life. I went in with absolutely no expectations and he put on the kind of performance that befits a man of his reputation, even though he at that point, quite far from the soaring heights of his earlier career. Speaking to other folks these past few days I know there's plenty other Dio fans out there who are missing him and, as you can hear from this mp3 post, his influence actually extends further than you might expect! EP's Trailer Park plays Americana-style folksy rock but, like many children of the 80s, he knew and loved Dio as a youngster: "It was 1984, I was ten years old and I was cycling to the ice rink in Visby for a hockey practice. I had a brand new yellow Sony Walkman and in it was a tape with Dio's debut album. I was wearing something that should resemble spandex pants (my mother had made them for me) and a denim jacket with a picture of the album cover of "Holy Diver" on the back. Hard rock and ice hockey was my entire world and Ronnie James Dio was god." I doubt he was the only one. This is Eric from EP's Trailer Park's tribute to the man, performed with backup support from Christian Kjellvander and recorded with Tobias Fröberg.

Tobias Fröberg - The big upTobias Fröberg
The big up
Fire Egg Recordings

A few years ago, Tobias Fröberg opened for Peter Morén's North American tour. While charming and hilarious, there was a distinct sense of also-ran, as Fröberg's engaging stage persona couldn't quite make up for the fact his songs were, at best, sweetly adequate. However, "The big up" gives us a different Fröberg, one who is ready to step out from behind "big brother Morén's" shadow. For those of us who have been longing to embrace both artist and music, it's about time!

Built around organ, understated strings, and a pronounced sense of melancholy, the songs of "The big up" are bluer, and the emotions a bit sharper than 2008's "Turn heads". Love, it appears, still weighs heavily on Fröberg's mind. Although, from the paean to lost war love "Sandra", to guitar-driven "I wanna hurt like that", to spectacularly understated "When we go to war", pain and violence is never far behind. Even when his self-deprecating charm peaks though on track "I hope that I die before you", it's not without a keen sense that the end is always in sight. So consistent is his theme and care that, by album's end, even the refrain of final track "Baby baby baby" feels indebted with emotion far beyond its simple words. Also-ran no more, introspect suits Fröberg.

Cookies n Beans album gets title, release date

Swedish pop/roots trio Cookies n Beans have finally confirmed that their new album "Beg, borrow and steal" will be released on March 24. Said album was produced by the band with help from Kristofer Åström and Magnus Tingsek and features songs written by fellow Swedish artists Lisa Miskovsky, Sophie Zelmani, Tobias Fröberg, Peter Morén (Peter Bjorn and John) and more, including themselves of course.

MP3: Tobias Fröberg - When we go to war

I've long held the opinion that Tobias Fröberg's talents are best served as a sideman/producer (he's worked with Theresa Andersson, Peter Morén, Tomas Andersson Wij and many others, typically with strong results) and his new record "The big up" doesn't do much to sway me, but he does hit one out of the park every now and then and lead single "When we go to war" is a perfect example. It's dark and simmering in the right ways, giving a proper bottom to Tobias' lightweight vocals. The swell of the strings too; perfect counterpoint. All in all, a strong winter single and well worth checking out.
