MP3: A Heavy Feather - Caitlin Mooney

A Heavy Feather is David Sandström and "Caitlin Mooney" is the first single from his album "You're the lotion on darkness knuckles as it punches light in the face". The concept of David taking his hyper-literate rock songwriting (see: David Sandström Overdrive) and applying it to hyper-literate, down-tempo electronica might seem bewildering, but that's because it is. On the other hand, he's done enough stylistic left-turns over the years, from Refused to the "Grandfather" album (my favorite) to collaborating with rapper Adam Tensta, his latest venture probably shouldn't come as a surprise, and yet it's not a direction I had anticipated. I'm really not sure what to make of the song either, especially outside the context of the album as a whole. It seems an odd choice as a single, but perhaps that's by design? I wouldn't put it past him.

Frida Selander - Forever on your team

I remember hearing Frida Selander in passing something like a half-dozen years ago and not being too impressed, but there's been considerable buzz building in the interim. For one, her inclusion as a member of David Sandström Overdrive is a surefire vote of confidence, but I've also been hearing increasingly louder whispers that her next album will be incredible. Not that I can confirm the hearsay, though we do have this new single to whet our appetites. "Forever on your team" is definitely reminiscent of DSO, not that that's a bad thing, not in the least. Recording with Oskar Sandlund probably helps (I believe it's him on drums as well). As for the rest, wait and see -- "Try again baby" will be officially released on March 25 via .

MP3: Folkvang - Folkvangs första

Folkvang are an unsigned act from Umeå, Sweden who play folksy instrumental music, not too far off from the sounds of Björn Olsson, but with a distinct Norrland touch. In fact, I'd say that "Folkvangs första" could be an Isolation Years song sans vocals; it's got that same sort of loping, easy-going melancholy sound I associate with the quieter acts of the region. Anyhow, the band has an album in the can, recorded by Christian Gabel (Bob Hund, Thåström, Hello Saferide, etc.) and mastered by Oskar Sasndlund (David Sandström Overdrive), but no label to release it... perhaps you might be interested?

David Sandström Overdrive - Pigs loseDavid Sandström Overdrive
Pigs lose
Razzia Records

7

Quite possibly the only former Refused member still musically relevant, the David Sandström Overdrive have returned with their third album "Pigs lose", their first for indie-stalwart Razzia. Keeping true to his Elvis Costello-inspired garage rock, "Pigs lose" gives us some of David Sandström's best material, but at sixteen tracks in length, also a few that are not. The lamenting balladry of "Lisa, Lisa", the plodding "Happy home" and the sheer epicness of "Tearing through the decades" showcase and hone the songwriting perfectly, whilst "Songs that maybe won't be forgotten" is easily one of the best songs of the year. However, "Dead alive" and "The god thing" are downright hokey and disrupt the album's flow. However, fans will not be disappointed; although a little editing down to ten or eleven songs would have made this album one of the more memorable of the year just past.

MP3: David Sandström Overdrive - Songs that maybe won't be forgotten

Facing the prospect of another 12-hour workday at ye old dayjob, so let's make this quick and easy. I can't wholeheartedly recommend the new David Sandström Overdrive album "Pigs lose" because it's got a bit too much filler, but man oh man, the good songs are damn good. Maybe even some of his/their best! It's the culmination of a 10+ year career with the wisdom of hindsight and the optimal optimism necessary to combat jadedness. Learn from the past, look forward to the future; don't dwell, keep on moving, keep looking at the world with fresh eyes. Turn up the fucking cowbell and get going! It's easy to get bogged down by negativity in this day and age, but we can fight it. Even better if we've got a kick-ass soundtrack.
